Rockwool RWA45 Insulation Foil Faced. Good Idea?

Hi,

there is a big debate about FRK and sound absorption. Rockwool RWA45 slabs come with foil. should i go for it or use another type of foil?

Ben

There is no debate. What do you want your absorbers to do?

i want to build some panels to treat my mixing position. The reason for the question is purely i see that FRK has a more balanced sound than non foiled treatment. True?

FRK is great to use for panels when they are not located in the early reflection points of the room but used as bass trapping mostly for corners.

The FRK will reflect some of the high end back in the room and will also act as a membrane which will help absorb a bit more low end.

To repeat what Andre was asking; exactly what do you want these panels to do? Absorb specular reflections? Absorb low frequencies, and if so, which ones?

Blinkfan27:

My apparent curtness is because there are at least three distinct purposes absorbers are used in room treatment:

1. Room ambience, also called reverberation, control;
2. Specular reflection reduction; and,
2. Modal reduction.

Three related, but distinct functions. There is fourth common purpose in room , though not popular here for some reason, which is difraction by the discontinuity between absorbent material and hard surfaces.

This is ignoring the use of it in multiple leaf partitions to increase sound isolation. Depending on the conversation, this is also a valid "room treatment".

We are not trying to be difficult. We want to give the right answer for your project.

i want the panels to absorb specular reflections and i would say bass frequencies around 100hz. Im not to bothered about the whole rooms reverb or ambience.

You need to make a decision on one of these criterias unless you can build them very deep.

PAROC WAS 50 sound absorption?

/Jens

EDIT: You should also check your modal behavior in the room before trying to address bass issues. It will save you a lot of headache.
