| Gear nut | What to do with a plant shelf -bass traps?
Hi everyone. I had a quick question regarding the new room for my mixing. I've planned to put up the basics such as bass traps, a cloud over the desk, absorbers behind and to the sides of the desk, and along the walls and in the back. However, what do I do when there is a 21" ridge that goes along the top of the room? (sometimes called a Plant Shelf) Room dementions are 154 inch wide, 188 inch long, and 120 inch high. Should I build some 21inch wide panels that sit vertically and aligned with the front of the ridge? I know that a room really could have bass traps in any of it's 12 corners, but how is that handled when the corner is not really a corner but a "cove"? I've included some pictures below, and thank you kindly for you input. (I won't be using the door that is next to the window so I can be closed off it needed. Same thing with the window) |

Ideally you'd remove those shelves. If you can't do that, I'd put bass traps in those corners anyway, and I'm sure that will still help a lot. --Ethan ________________ The Acoustic Treatment Experts |

Yeah, removing the shelves isn't possible at this point. How would you recommend laying the traps in the space? It seems like the shelves take original 1 corner made by the wall and ceiling and turn it into a total of 3 corners to deal with, and i'm thinking that the corners closer to the ceiling are most important to treat first. |

I'd probably lay 12-inch thick fiberglass in the entire corner area. That is, it would look like a rectangular soffit when you're done. --Ethan ________________ The Acoustic Treatment Experts |

Or You could send Ethan a nice order for this planter traps!!! lol RealTraps - Planter Traps I agree on the fiberglass in that area. You could finish it off with fabric to the front.

| Rolled up pink fluffy with a nice scrim in front of it? I rolled-up cotton batts and put them on the 16-18" left above the cabinets - worked pretty well. -tINY |

Just laying some insulation in the gap is a great idea. I'll have to try that and make a fabric screen over the front. I guess I was still thinking that I would have to buy a ton of 703, but pink insulation is def worth a try. Thank you very much you everyones input.

| Just make sure you leave it compressed in the packaging. That'll keep the density in the right range. -tINY |

Thanks for clearing that up, I pry wouldn't have done it like that. Would you recommend taking the rolls and connecting the flat ends to make a long tube that goes lengthwise, or just sit the rolls on the flat side?
