RFZ and gap

Is leaving too much gap behind RFZ panels a bad thing? In another saying, should i leave gap as much as possible? Or is there an optimum value?
Thanks

So you are leaving a gap in order to trap lower frequencies, right? RFZ panels are primarily for specular reflections, which do not involve low frequencies that behave modally (use basstraps for that). But leaving 2-4 inches gap behind it makes it more effective at lower frequencies. I don't think there's any point making it bigger than that, because you'll go past the 1/4 wavelength max. energy point. Does this make any sense?

The ideal air gap is equal to the panel thickness, but with thick panels you can go to twice as big a gap. Full explanation in my Acoustics FAQ in the section "Optimizing the Air Gap":

There has been testing of 703 and 705 with a 16" gap which shows pretty nice results. See the following.

I think though if you want to be safe then stick with the thickness of the panel.
