I was kind of wondering why you mentioned the FRK. All good.

So, picking up on this, as i'm about to make my own cloudlayer...

For bass trapping, will the cloud be most efficient over the speaker, over the listening position, in the 1st reflection point or doesn't it matter?

A cloud isn't primarily for bass trapping, it is to absorb sound that would be directly reflected back to you by the ceiling. For that to work, you would put it on the ceiling between you and the speakers. i.e. the reflection point. Pretty simple eh.

The difference between this and bass trapping is that bass frequencies generally don't behave in such a directional way, so they are treated separately from specular reflections..

In this thread they were talking about how the size of the air gap between the panel and the ceiling affects absorption frequency response.

I am aware of this. So there is no reason NOT to put them in the 1st reflection point, the bass trapping capabilities will be equal. I am hoping to dampen the 74Hz floor-ceiling node as well as the 1st reflection from my LCRs.

However, you can do this more certainly by triggering the modes directly using sine waves. Run a Mode Calc, find the likely modes. Sweep sines around those frequencies to exactly hit resonance. Listen or use an SLM to find the hot spots. Good locations for bass traps.

if you are walking around finding where the sines are 'loudest' (hence, where you say to put bass traps) --- isn't human hearing based more on pressure, than particle velocity? isn't this opposite of what you want for porous absorption?

thanks!
