Thread Starter | FIBREX (like OC 703) needs a cover/wrapper
I purchased a case of FIBREX Insulation for sound absorption (instead of Owens Corning 703). I think I need to wrap it with some kind of material, so I don't constantly have to vacuum up little bits of it. I read about "white garden fabric" but can't find any locally. So I bought some BLACK PLASTIC LANDSCAPE FABRIC (see picture). Not sure if it'll work though, because it's almost impossible to blow air through it. The mesh is very tight. I'm thinking if air can't move through it easily, then sound waves (air movements) can't either... SO IS THIS BLACK LANDSCAPE FABRIC NOT SUITABLE? IS BURLAP THE CHEAPEST GOOD OPTION? Or do you recommend something else? Thanks |

In addition to this post being in the wrong location (read the post located immediately above this one!), why on earth would someone buy landscaping fabric ('weedstop') as an 'acoustically transparent' covering??? hmmmm... ![]() Well, at least it is cheap and has myriad other uses! I would go so far as to say just about any fabric would be an improvement over this - aside from the benefit that you will not have to worry too much about weed growth. You want a relatively 'open' weave fabric. As you have discovered, landscaping fabric is anything but. The fabric you made reference to may be a shade cloth designed to cut down on light transmission which is made in various degrees of emissivity. But that is much different than landscaping underlayment. Burlap would work fine. Look about the forum, as this topic has been beaten to death over the past few days here in this section. |

Per your comments, I found a nearby thread entitled, "Question about fabric covering mineral wool ". It's AMAZING how directly in line that topic is with my own. Frankly, I was in a hurry when I posted, so didn't have time to search for similar threads. Also, I figured my question was so odd/unusual that there'd be no others like it. Go figure. At any rate, thanks for the reply. It appears my impressions were dead on. I couldn't blow air throught it, so I surmized that air movements due to sound waves wouldn't penetrate it either. Seat o' the pants GENIUS, I am |

ALSO, I read somewhere that GARDEN FABRIC is the "right stuff". There's also a heavier weight version HERE but I can't tell by the pic-and-description whether it's too dense to block air movement... |
