Thread Starter | Frame ideas for drop ceiling
I'm planning on building a drop ceiling placed between speakers and listening position. I'll use 4 panels (120 x 60 x 10 cm) next to each other and make two layers so the total thickness will be 20 cm. Rockwool with 60kg/m3 density. It would be nice to see how people have built the frame. I need something of course to uphold the panels, and also I'm thinking it would be nice to build it in a way where I can add diffusors on the outside later if ever I want to. It will be used in a living room, so the look counts. |

How about a normal drop ceiling you see in offices. I am sure you could rig something like that up.

Not about the frame, but... 60KG is not optimum for that application. Your cloud is quite thick. You could go way way lighter. With a decent airgap there will be better performance with lighter material. See the figures at www.bobgolds.com Absorption coefficients. Note the performance of light materials with the 16 inch airgap. DD |

There will be a quite large airgap. The picture shows how I probably will do the frame, but I will suspend it with wires. There's also a picture of my listening position. | |

60KG will work fine. With a frame and that thickness, 40 would probably work a little better and be a bit lighter and cheaper. Check out these materials by feel if you can. Some are a lot more floppy than others. Generally fibreglass is lighter and stiffer. In general, thicker traps work better with lighter materials. There is no specific threshold, it's a sliding scale. Also note different manufacturers products of the same density vary quite a bit in terms of performance. So any numbers like 10 or 20cm are just suggested guidelines. http://www.bobgolds.com/AbsorptionCoefficients.htm DD |
