Thread Starter | Odd Shaped Room, Need Help!
This is my first post, but I've been lurking for a while! I'm redoing a rehearsal space that I built in my basement and converting it into a studio. I'm curious as to where the best area is to place my desk and monitors while taking into account the 38% rule. Since the room is not a rectangle, what kind of issues will I run into acoustically and what are some suggested remedies (beyond what a normal shaped room would need)? I attached two mock ups of the room and the two possible placements for my setup. Thanks guys! |

What are the dimensions? What are the walls made of? I can guess various reasons to prefer either. My instinct says go with the wider space and install a very deep bass trap, say 2 feet deep, in the back 'alcove' A test using one speaker and a mic may show an advantage. Check the Waterfalls for modal behaviour. That is the only sure way to decide. FuzzMeasure (Mac only) or the free REW. DD |

The room is 7ft high, 23ft long, 12ft wide on the long side and 9ft wide on the short side. It's sheetrock wall, carpet floor, and drop ceiling. All of the insulation used in the walls and ceiling is soundproof insulation. My only concern with either position is the placement of the early reflection panels. If I go with the wider space the panel would land on the door and in the narrower space the panel would land on a wall angled away from me. I'm going to test the room once I finish painting, just looking on some input before I set everything back up! Thanks again. |

Ultimately only measuring will show the best position. I would focus on the modal response. I wouldn't sweat the symmetry too much. Once the early reflection panels are in place it hardly matters much what is behind them. The wider version would place the side walls and their reflections a bit further away, a good start. DD |

I would set it up to give you the wides side. File 3 is the one I am talking about. As far as acoustic set up see the following as a guide. Let me know if you have any questions. GIK Acoustics: Room Setup
