Thread Starter | Bass trap that works like a sliding door?
I have a room with an opening that has no door on it, and I'd like to add absorption there. My first thought was to build a large panel, and slide it across the floor when I'd need quiet, but I think I could do better, with sealing the gaps, ease of use, price, and construction time, by hanging something, instead. I would just get a large futon cover and fill it with insulation. I figure I can just secure it with hooks, somehow, but I'd rather not have to push it out of the way every time I enter or exit the room. Is there some kind of way to make it slide to the side, instead? I don't know much about construction, but I know that I have sliding doors that move along a track in the ceiling, so I figure this is a realistic idea. They're just not as heavy as this would be, I think, so I probably can't just copy them. ...What about just a curtain rod sort of deal? |

| A real door with seals fitted will do a lot more to isolate sound from outside the room. Then you don't need to make the trap moveable and can put it in a corner where it will do more good. -tINY |

Isolation is not really what I want to do here. Very little of what I do is sound recording; because I'm primarily MIDI-based, I don't care much if noise gets in. The opening allows the room to effectively be a lot bigger, so I don't want to plug it. It would be nice if I could contain my own noise better without reducing the size of the room, but I know you know that that doesn't work. I'm already velcroing pillow protectors filled with insulation EVERYWHERE on the walls and ceiling. And I made "monitor stands" out of boxes that are about 2'x3'x4', and filled with mineral wool.

An opening is the best bass trap. Meaning the bass leaves the room, so don't put anything there.

I still want to dampen the noise a bit on the way out. It turns out that there's a door that opens up into the hallway a few feet away from the opening to the room. I'm going to try Velcro-ing a few insulation pillows to the walls (in a frame shape), and that door, and then I'll pull the door towards the pillows. I think it should work out nicely, but if anyone ever has anything to offer in terms of sliding mechanisms that support hefty hanging bags of disgusting fluff, please do post it here. | |
