I'd recommend a gap of at least 100mm between the new wall and existing, bigger gaps give better performance. 15mm Gyproc Soundbloc Plasterboard has a density of 12.6kg/m2. I've always struggled to find densities for plywood etc. though, but don't know if they'll be that dense for the thickness

Generally plasterboard is denser /cheaper than wood. Maybe 30mm of cement impregnated MDF is denser but much more expensive than two layers of 15mm plasterboard. There is a very good reason why the vast majority of construction, here and elsewhere uses plasterboard. There are special grades of plasterboard which are specifically for acoustic purposes, much heavier. However much more expensive, so yet again, an extra thickness of the standard product will probably win out. Double layer techniques, plus the damped airgap, plus complete separation between this new structure and the existing one is absolutely the norm for this problem. DD |

Wood Densities Appendix 1 - List of wood densities for tree species from tropical America, Africa, and Asia. And here are some plywood densities in cubic also Plywood Density - See See Plywood WikiAnswers - Weight of Plywood I don't know, a priori it seems to me that a big piece of 2'' of pine wood would weight more than the same piece of plasterboard. But it would probably be more expensive.
