Someone please confirm my treatment methods...

OK I know there is so much of this going about but I can't find anything in which every product used matches mine.

I want to get this done soon.

I plan to buy one pack of RW3 and one pack of RW5 (both 100 mm thick - is this ok?) to initiate treatment of my room.

I know then that I should cover these in breathable material - muslin or hessian - but then for the bass traps (RW5) I have heard that you should use a low pass filter such as clingfilm over the front. Do I need this if I'm coating them in breathable material? If so does it go over or under the material? Also how tight should this be?

How essential is a frame? Tbh, I am not sure entirely which way I should angle the traps in the corner. Do I just stuff it in there lol? Apologies for this.

In summary:
  • 100 mm ok?
  • Breathable material AND clingfilm or just b.m.?
  • Frame necessary?
  • How do I actually go about angling this into a corner?
  • Use adhesive to attach breathable material to rockwool?

I will be very grateful to whoever helps.

Yes

The clingfile will help keep some of the highs in the room and also act as a membrane which will help absorb more low end. So yes use it if you can. And only to the front of the panel.

Frames are for looks only

Here is a LAME video of how we recommend hanging ours. You could use the same thing if you build them with frames.

I would just wrap it.

Before doing anything I think it's essential to learn enough so you can make
your own decisions based on your requirements and budget. There are so
many different opinions that you have to be in a position to judge their value
rather than follow blindly.

Reading two days of posts here and over in Studio building / acoustics would
probably answer most of your questions. Don't forget the sticky's at the top of
the forums.

Better

Hi Adam. There are better performing products, which are likely available to you. Here's two for instance.
RockSilk RS60 = 704 or RS100=705
Isover High Performance Duct Cladding Slabs. = 703 with FRK already on it.
Look for a spray glue like Sprayfix. This sprays a light web of glue which doesn't block up the insulation.
Try to find an industrial/HVAC supplier. Cheaper, better products.
RS100 is stiff enough to work without a frame, the others probably not.
Thicker is better.

Glenn and DanDan, I have been reading a lot of your posts over the last few months and am very grateful to hear responses from you both.

Glenn:

That video was helpful, thanks. To clarify: you recommend using the clingfilm in conjunction with the breathable material covering the fibreglass? Should it go over or under the material and how tight shouldit be?

DanDan:

From what I have read I thought RS60 was basically the same as RW3 and RS100 the same as RW5. Could anyone else (Glenn?...) confirm this? Are these really better materials? Also Dan, would you choose RS or Isover? I probaly will stick with RW3 and RW5 as I know they will be sufficient but hearing others' viewpoints is where it's at...

PaulP:

Sorry Paul, I seem to have omitted that the reason I want to start so soon is because I have done nothing but absorb information on this for the past two months lol. Now it's got to the point where I really just want to get them in my 'studio'... but thanks for your post.

Thanks all. I hate sounding like yet another inexperienced and naive home recordist, but essentially it is this hate which motivates me to escape this label and to make improvements like building bass traps .

Material

You are welcome Adam. Choosing materials is more often an availability or cost issue than performance. However, I would included workability. RW seems very floppy to me. The Isover Slabs are just about stiff enough to need no frame on a wall. The RS100 will hold it's shape overhead.

Between the fabric and the RW. It does not have to be tight.
