At least 12" for the depth. In the example you gave, the depth is 17".

I would stick with no less then 17", but if it will not fit then it is better then nothing.

I know this is an old thread, but that looks like one of the easiest builds I've seen yet. I'm not a very handy guy and only have a couple of basic, basic tools. If I could get the wood cut to length for me, I bet I could pull this off...
