Thread Starter | bass trap thank you
Hey Gearslutz folks... I've been a member of the GS forum for a couple of weeks now... I came here looking for info on bass traps because I needed to build some for a small voice over booth. I found a ton of info and many helpful people. Just wanted to say many thanks for all the advice. Also wanted to share something I learned along the way by trial and error... and this may be old info for some of you. When it came to cutting Roxul mineral wool to size... I first tried a utility knife but ended up king of butchering the first piece. Then I tried a reciprocating saw with a hack saw blade inserted backwards and it worked like a dream. I used a 48" drywall square to mark the pieces with a black sharpie... which gave me an easy line to follow while cutting... and with the blade in backwards and cutting away from myself... I could see where I was going with the cut instead of where I'd been. Was much easier to keep the blade square. Hopefully that will be helpful to someone... just wanted to try to give back. hasta luego |

I'm interested since I have such a saw that I got for some renovation work that didn't happen so I've never used it. Do you operate it one handed ? Seems kind of awkward for that. Paul P | |

PaulP Yes... reciprocating saw... or sawzall as some call them. I was cutting 2 inch roxul with 8 lb per cubic foot density... and by running the saw at about half speed the material didn't move. I used two hands when I began a cut so the blade wouldn't jitter too much. When I got about halfway through the cut, I switched to one hand... and held the piece that I was cutting of with the other hand. I found I couldn't really operate the saw one-handed with a glove on... so I took off the glove on my cutting hand... and of course left the glove on the hand that was holding the rockwool that I was trimming off. Didn't take long to get in the groove... and with the fine teeth on the hacksaw blade I got a smooth cut. I was afraid that a sawtoothed wood cutting blade would tear up the wool. good luck |

Yep... if you don't have a reciprocating saw (sawzall) or are not into tools... that carving knife would be great... and much cheaper too!! |
