Thread Starter | lightweight portable superchunks
I have finally started sorting my room out, been in here 4 months and it's really been doing my head in! have managed to mix but it's not been fun. I rent so not doing anything installed I am adapting some of the helhotz boxes I built for my last (much smaller) room, doing some standard broadband panels and putting some small portable superchunks up for the top 1.2m of the corners behind the monitors. these are made from 30x30cm squares of RS45 cut in half diagonally. It's a little small but the sheets are 120x60cm so it's a divider of this, and also it's a space issue. There may be space for another flat panel in front of the corner chunks epecially if it's not at the 45 degree angle. may also do 2 small panels angled down from the ceiling towards the corners here is a pic of the frame for the superchunks. It is superlight. the wood is just 8mm by 20mm. the wood pieces used to screw the brackets in is a little ugly, but it will be covered by fabric and they will space the thing from the wall. you could use little bolts instead. The ply triangle ends are 8mm. I can hold this up on my little finger. I am not sure if I ought to be covering the fibre panels in some poly material I read about but have now lost, in order to avoid dust...? I didn't before and my boxes had great big holes in, but then my studio was rather prone to dust |

A layer of Polyester Batting or Wadding under the final fabric can help contain the fibres. DD |

Ended up putting some chicken wire on these to help keep the triangles more stable These are going to be difficult to wrap as I won't be able to staple into the flimsy frame except at the joints...Think I will have to sew the back up! kinda wish I'd just somehow worked it out to fit in 60cm ones.... time will tell I have completed various other panels by adapting my previous tuned boxes and using some recycled materials I had a 20cm deep box that was sealed with a perforated front that I took the front panel off, cut most of the wood out of the sides to make it more absorbant and put 2 10cm thick sheets of 45kg Rocksilk in. considered, as it has a solid back, putting 1 sheet and a cavity but I ended up filling it these boxes will get moved around a bit so we'll see. It's the low end that really needs sorting. I still have 5 sheets spare and I'm sure i'll need them (the room is 2.8m x 4.7m x 2.3m and used for tracking, mixing and rehearsing) I think I may just get a friend to sew some covers for them as the material I have is quite stiff. putting 'em up tommorow! |
