Acceptable Foam for Reflection zones?

Hi Guys,

I want to place more treatment in my room. My studio is in an attic conversion and the ceiling on each side angled and plastered, so reflections are a problem. I really need to treat these and would love to make 4" panels from Rockwool to place on the side walls and as a cloud above my head. However after consulting all parties I cannot mount these panels in a way that would damage the plaster by drilling or nailing hooks into the surface. Its a real pain, but that is the situation.

I've always discounted foam products, but am thinking that I could at least make my problems better by treating the side walls with foam and building more free standing panels to place in my corners.

Is there a kind of foam that is better than others? There seem to be tons of people offering it for sale in the UK but I am dubious as to some of the sellers' claims, and frankly their knowledge. I would rather not go the auralex route as their foam products are just plain ugly.

Is there an equivalent mass produced foam such as we use mass produced kinds of rockwool/silk/oc703 in panels?

Thanks,

Iwan

These parties won't even let you hang a picture on the wall ? There is
really little difference between that and hanging an absorber. Sticking
foam to the wall or ceiling could be a whole lot worse to fix up afterwards,
unless you first stick it to something, then hang it like a picture.

Agreed a 100%. Also you can use stands for regular panels.

I can't use stands for these traps as the ceiling is sloped and putting them on stands would actually cut of a large proportion of the space in the room.

I thought foam would be much cleaner, since I've seen them use it in Sound On Sound readers stories in rented accomodation where they cannot damage the walls. I guess it could be a sales driven article (hence the copious amounts of Auralex)

I am concerned that driving nails/hooks into plasterboard will crack the plaster. As it is not a solid wall I am also concerned about how I would go about mounting panels which are heavier than a normal picture frame.

Just to be clear on the type of wall I'm talking about, the attic was previously only used for storage and then converted into a spare room. I guess the builders must have used some kind of plaster board as the sloping ceiling/wall. Either way knocking the ceiling with my knuckle yields a failry hollow sound. What's the deal with mounting on this kind of surface?

I would like to go with fibreglass of course but I need to make sure I can "make good" with the surface if I ever move out of the room (IE fill the holes in/blend the colour etc)

Cheers,
Iwan

A staple gun works best. Even works with drywall just make sure you punch it in the thinest area of the foam

Holes

Hang them all! Go for light panels. Isover High Performance Duct Cladding is good. Leave the FRK on the side facing the ceiling. Use Fabric or Ready Bags. If you go Ready, make sure to specify EU dimensions 1200x600x50mm
Drill holes in the plasterboard, this how to minimise damage. I use Hilti plasterboard plugs. These are plastic, wings that fold out. The will hold up anything. The holes are easily filled after.
Find the right screws for the plugs, add a little L bracket. Use cable ties to attach. If you glue anything up there you will be left with an awful mess if you try to remove it.
