Thread Starter | Rockwool bales as corner bass traps -- experiences?
Hi! I'm just going thorugh Ethan Winer's acoustic treatment guide, and came across this paragraph about piling rolled-up bales of fiberglass: Another great and inexpensive way to make a bass trap - if you have a lot of room - is to place bales of rolled up fluffy fiberglass in the room corners. These bales are not expensive, and they can be stacked to fill very large spaces. Better still, they are commonly available and you don't even have to unpack them! Just leave the bales rolled up in their original plastic wrappers, and stuff them in and near the room corners wherever they'll fit. Stack them all the way up to the ceiling for the most absorption. Actually I had this same idea a while ago, but didn't think it would work. Has anyone here given it a try? Which would be the appropriate material to do that (in Rockwool™ currency please )EE |

Im still unclear over this too. It seems like a waste. Why not layer 2 or 3 of those together and make a frame with some sort of backing to make it rigid? This way it seems like you would be making the bales spread further. I dont know, im still trying to figure this thing out so somebody else correct me if this isnt a good idea. I could see my kids itching up a storm playing with the ten foot stack of fiberglass in the corner.

I recently set up about 20 rolls of this stuff in three different corners. Here's the before and after: Green is untreated, purple is after the pink fluffly stuff. ![]() I had a 25dB difference at 70 Hz, and they were effective down to 40Hz. Thanks to my room modes, it will never sound great but my bass response is now within 15dB. Ethan has mentioned this as a decent benchmark for a small room. It's a lot better than the almost 40dB difference I had before. Definitely easy on the wallet as Home Depot is selling them for less than $10 bucks a pop. Now I just have to dress them up: they are not very pretty. ![]() ![]() |

You could build a false wall in front of them out of fabric if you want it to look better.

What density would be best if using bales in their wrapping? 12kg/m3? 30kg/m3? 50kg/m3? 70 kg/m3? is heavy stuff preferable? |
