How big an airgap should I use?

Hi folks,

Just a quick question regarding airspace.

Im constructing a few DIY Gobos, primarily for sound absorption but also for a little isolation. The framed up Gobos will consist of:
  • Fabric Covered 4" 703
  • Air Gap
  • 1" MDF

How big should the air gap be between the MDF and the 703? I was thinking 2". Would that be okay?

Thanks for any advice,
John.

It depends on low you want to absorb. The good news is that with 4" of 703 type material, you can have a gap as great as 8" and get good absorption. 4" flush will give good absorption down to around 125 Hz. With 8"gap down to around 40 Hz.

Great, thanks for the reply Andre.

Thats amazing, never realised there is potential to absorb to such a low frequency, simply be increasing the air gap (up to a maximum level of absorption of course)

It makes sense then to include as big an air gap as I can manage. I'll definitely do more than 2", probably around the 5" mark. Im happy if the absorption stretches to the 100Hz mark.

Cheers!
John
