Itchy bitchy eyes!

Hi guys!

I removed the treatment in my ceiling today. As some of you know I built another room for drums so I don't need that much treatment in the ceiling in my CR.

The part I removed was my own DIY ceiling cloud. I suspect that it wasn't healthy for me because my eyes have been a little red and irritated. It also felt like the air was too dry. I didn't have these problems before installed the cloud(?). I used thin cotton textile to cover the mineral wool. I have a air ventilation hole pretty close to the cloud and maybe the air from ventilation pushed some of the fibers out in the room?

Anyways, I just wanted to share with you guys that I'm hoping that my health will improve. I stopped smoking weed so my eyes shouldn't be red anymore, right?

/Doc

But seriously guys! I know my posts are a little wicked odd ballsy... Still the question remains. Why did my eyes itch? Isn't the mineral wool supposed to be safe if you don't rock it around the room? It was resting comfortably up in my ceiling with no movement what so ever...

The air seems lighter and more fresh now after I removed my diy cloud. I'm more concerned now when I have a little son. I just want to keep everything healthy and nice.

Does anyone have a clue - what could have been wrong with my cloud? My guess is that the ventilation hole where pushing air that some how pushed the fibers out from the textile and into the air...

My guess, my two cents, etc!

i think you pretty much answered your own question...

if the wool is not disturbed, then its ok...

but i would suspect air blowing over would cause your problem

why not re-direct the air away from the cloud?

I find clouds problematic, given that they're over your head. Any kind of
bass will shake them up pretty good.

As far as dry air goes, I have a similar situation at a cottage we built a few
years ago. The walls and woodwork of about half the house are still
unpainted and as soon as I walk in my nose blocks right up. The air doesn't
even have to be dry. I have no trouble imagining a room full of rockwool
doing the same.

well, i hope they arent because i got a 6 footer going up in a few days I havent seen any threads or read anything about clouds be problematic.

i have had 4 2'x4' bass traps mounted on the ceiling/wall corner for a week now, and i had the bass cranked up a few times......we will see how it goes in the long run....

A lot of people work daily in rooms full of rockwool panels...a lot of sleep in the same room ( myself included)....i cant say i have heard anyone say it was causing them issues..

I doubt that bass would cause the fibers to come loose. unless you have some massive subs or something....

i think that rockwool is better than fiberglass in regards to irratation. I have worked with fiberglass before, and just a little caused me a lot of problems...

remember those corner traps i built? i spent hours and hours cutting rockwool with only a mask on and wearing short sleeves...it only caused me a slight irratation on my arms.

I didn't use any eye protection when I installed the mineral wool because I thought that my glasses would be enough and man my eyes got really irritated and itchy. You better use some protection when you install the cloud.

Another dear memory that came up today was the smell of cat pee. The shop who sells the wool have all their wool outside and I suspect that they have had cats peeing on the wool because it smells like cat pee in my studio - that smell came to life again now when I removed the cloud...

I'm thinking of using hard rockwool next time. Seems more safe. What you think guys?

Yeah I could re-direct the air but it's just a simple ventilation hole in the wall. I can choose if I want to close it or open it up to get more air in the room. It's nothing fancy.

maybe the cat pee ( doesnt it contain a lot amoina?) is causing your itchy bitchy eyes.

i cut up a ton of rockwool when i did my superchunks...and it only caused a slight irratation on my arms...no itchy eyes, skin..no coughing weezing...etc although.....maybe some people are more sensitive than others...

check out my bass trap build to see wha im talking about...

My Bass trap build

Also, heres an idea...try adding another layer of fabric to the cloud, if the fibers are in fact escaping..maybe that will contain the little buggers.

edit: hard rockwool next time? didnt you use semi rigid/rigid rockwool?

I'm using rockwool, my bad... I thought it was called mineral wool. But there are different types of rockwool. I was thinking of trying those really packed bastards that are not so fluffy. My friend used them in his studio. They are easier to cut etc. But I don't know if they are as effective as the fluffy guys...

What you think guys?

My guess is that you're exhibiting some symptoms of an allergy to the cat urine... which could actually contain a lot of ammonia.

But wouldn't the effect of the cat pee go away after a while? I had the cloud for one year. But I haven't spend that much time in the basement this year. I've been busy being a dad.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

cat pee is really potent stuff. i remember past cats the my family had...when they pee'd on the carpet...the smell almost never went away no matter how much you cleaned it. Imagine it hanging below the ceiling with air passing over it....

put some fressh rockwool in, and if you want to be certain, put another thin layer of fabric in and put that thang back up. easy as wax on wax off.

Think about what you just said...

The smell of cat urine came back, AFTER a year of sitting undisturbed... The cat urine didn't go anywhere. Only the fact that the area that was exposed to moving air "pseudo" out gassed.

Unless you applied something to the mineral wool to neutralize the ammonia, you didn't get rid of it. And even then, you'd have to completely saturate the mineral wool to have any chance of eliminating it.

I'm kind of tired of the fluffy rockwool stuff. I think there is enough treatment in my CR as it is. I'm going to add super chunks in my drum room. Maybe try diffusion in the ceiling if it's possible. My ceiling is standard hight 83 inches...

No more cat urine... No more weed eyes!

That cat pee smell could be mold. I would lay the stuff out side for a few days to let it air out.
