Thread Starter | Is Roxul rockboard up to the task?
I'm all for searching, but I've literally read HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS of posts here and on other forums for the last 6 hours straight. I see some general consensus that mineral wool in general works well, general consensus that denser is better... a couple dissenters about the possibility of being too dense. Well, I'll check my yellow pages to make sure I'm not missing something, but the stuff seems rather hard to come by whether it be 7.3, mineral wool, etc. I'm ready to order today, and I'm just trying to figure out whe4ther I'm making a mistake going with rockboard 60 via ats accoustics... best pricing I could find so far comes to about $70 per six 2inch panels including delivery to Orlando, FL. My room is so small, and I will be recording vocals in here too, etc... so yes, I need LOTS of bass trapping, but I'm concerned about reflections and have decided to do a ridiculous amount of traps and forego the frk. There are some odd comments on seller's site about it being very rigid but brittle and similar to styrofoam in that regard. I have not yet been able to locate the 8lb version... nor really get any expert input as to whether it's a good thing going that dense. Generally, am I on the right track? If I double up on this stuff and do extra traps, am I good for everything from bass traps to broadband panels? At this pricing, I could afford a superchuck as well, but basically, I want to do whatever I can afford to do to get get a room dead enough to track vocals in, and flat enough to mix in... and I've got a tiny square room, so... |

70 dollars for six sheets? that seems awefully expensive...even with delivery and all... man at that price, its going to cost quite a bit to do everything... So you are buying from a store that sells acoustical products? They probably charge a lot more than say a business that sells construction products... if you go with 4" bass traps, you could only do 3 of them for the $70 Superchunks eat up a lot of insulation...i forget how many triangles a sheet will yield if you make the chunk say 24"x24"x34"....and i dont know if you are going from floor to ceiling.... You might be able to find a store some distance away...drive there and pick it up yourself... BTW, i believe the general consensus around here will tell you that 60 density is fine. |

No luck on quick search for bartells in orlando. Price I found for the roxul was 48something preshipping. I had one shipping calculator spit back shipping costs higher than the product cost for any fl zipcode. 3 sets of 6 sheets... $1078 for overnight, or only around $200 for regular.... yikes. So as for roxull... no weird reflections because it's overly stiff? That's what I was left wondering when they compared it to styrofoam. Checking list of Roxul distributors in area now and picking up the phone... Read in another thread to ask for the 4lb per cuft stuff... is that really optimal? If I find someone with higher density at a good deal, it would be better for bass traps, right? What about the broadband absorbers, tho... is 8lb too much for them? |

You're not exactly out in the sticks. For thicker bass traps you want absorbant that's not too dense. 3-4 lbs/cuft is usually what's recommended. If you go really thick (you probably don't have the space) you can use regular pink insulation. Paul P

Well, I'm planning on doing one floor to ceiling superchunk, and one smaller one... 18inches per wall side by whatever the other side comes out to...

Earlier today I came across this link describing how a smallish room was heavily treated. The full thread is on studiotips : Mark's Studio Build Diary. Probably way more than you're interested in doing but I found it interesting. Rockwool RW3 was used. Paul P |

You need to look for commercial insulation suppliers, you are not going to get a good price from an acoustic website. They are just buying the stuff from a supplier and then reselling it in smaller bundles for more expensive Quote:
Ask if your local insulation suppliers are Owens Corning distributors, if they are they should be able to order 703, 705 etc. good luck

I hope he's not planning on leaving the rockwool exposed like that. ![]() CallMeAll, I don't know about rockboard, but Roxul AFB Fire Batt can be had for $22 a batt; I think that's 10 or twelve sheets of 2 inch and 6 sheets of 4 inch. Contact Next Gen Locator And see if they'll refer a supplier in your area. Last edited by YetiHunter; 23rd November 2009 at 11:03 PM.. Reason: Wrong link |

only got a chance to call a few suppliers today, and they didn't have any, but I can call tomorrow. Hadn't thought of ebay... usually anything I'm looking for comes up on google with ebay site if it's there, but will try... |

I don't know if your dead set on the rockwool, but if a supplier is an Owens Corning distributor (most are) than you should be able to order any OC product through them. At least give that a shot.

This might be a repeat suggestion, however, Johns Manville makes equivalent rigid fiberglass products. Also, there are other rockwool manufacturers aside from Roxul; keep an eye out for what's local. Have you visited John Sayers forum? |

I am considering mineral wool stuff like Fibrex, Roxul, CertainTeed and also OC, but not sure on the prices as of yet. I know there are OC plants here in TX (I passed one in Waxahachie while driving to Dallas for the holiday) but I'm unsure if this could potentially be a money-saver for me, but I HIGHLY doubt it. Anyhow, I do plan to build DIY traps starting sometime in January, so I am looking. If you had been reading for 6 hrs maybe you had come across this link, but in case you didn't, here's helpful info regarding possible products: http://www.bobgolds.com/AbsorptionCoefficients.htm

ok... been tied up last week with holiday, but I can call some distributors today. I'm thinking at this point about just covering all the walls with 2-4" depending on price, then trapping all the upper edges of the rooms and the wall corners where possible. Question then becomes how to cover everything. Im thinking something like muslin, then using fancy nailhead upholstery tacks to give it a tufted look... just a diamond pattern every couple feet or so.... gotta keep the gf happy on aesthetics, and she's already freaking out about making the room smaller and covering up the paint. Since Ive never actually seen any of these products, how rigid are they exactly? can I nail through them and have them buckle a bit like upholstery foam? Is rockwool brittle at all? |

dont think you are going to be able to do nailing into the rockwool of any kind. it will just tear through...its not like upolstery foam.. Theres really no way around having to build a frame...welll...i guess you could just wrap the insulation itself...but trust me it wont look good...at least in my opinion. theres a number of different way to go about building the frame...some easy...some more involved... a search on google and youtubes yields a lot of info..like this.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=*********** if you want to cut the rockwool/fiberglass, buy an electric carving knife....check out my thread too, lots of info in there good luck

Does anyone know if Johns Mansville 813 is the same as Owens Corning 703? I'm in Canada and can't seem to get the OC703. This other product comes in the 1" and 2" and has the FRK - it sounds like it's similar, but I would like to be sure.
