Super cheap bass trap thing

Building a little mixing spot in my garage. Used Ikea Gorm shelving and hung ultratouch cotton to make a "bass trap" back wall. Wrapped with fabric. Looks ok. Not sure how well it works but it will have to do!

Do you know what kind of ultratouch you used? Can you calculate the density of it?

As long as they are 4" or thicker and the backs are open you should be ok. Kind of hard to make out the pictures.

Ultratouch has a quirk in its reported absorption data that without without further information makes me recommend not use thicker that 4" ultratouch for absorption. If wanting lower frequency absorption, have a gap behind the material.

I sent email to ultratouch asking for more information about the lf absorption quirk, but never received any response.

Yes. My photography skills are lacking. Open backed and about 5 inches thick.

Cool! Thanks A bunch for the input!

These were pretty fast and cheap to make. It is not often you get to add "good" to fast and cheap!

I also made superchunk style traps in the front two corners out of the ultra touch. Wall-ceiling corners and cloud will be 2 inch 703. The wall-ceiling ones will be stuffed with the remaining ultra touch cotton.

Andre,

Could you expand on this any more?
Do you suspect that the gas flow properties are too high for thicknesses over 4"?

On a side note, do we know what the gas flow properties of Ultratouch is?

Thanks,
Seamus

I emailed asking for that information and received nothing. So the answers to you questions are:

no,
yes, and
no

Obviously, if we knew the gas flow resiistivity of the material, question number 2 would become moot. That sentence is for other people reading the post, not you.

Andre

You are a King of Logic and I commend you.

I suppose that they don't really care about the acoustic applications of their product. It's too bad.

Glenn,
I realize that it's probably a rhetorical question and that I'm being MOTO (Master of the Obvious) by saying this, but...

I would have to guess that they don't really care about the acoustic applications of their product.
I'm sure it represents a very small percentage of their over all business.

Tell them that you'll be building a civic center in NYC that takes up a city block, and they'll answer.
