Thread Starter | Pegboard panel backs Hi all, I found this when googling and wondered what you all make of it: Acoustic Panel Basically, using a solid backing of peg board instead of making a wooden frame. Seems ingeniously simple and a lot easier to make, but will it affect the acoustical properties of the panel? Particularly when the panel is space a few inches from the wall? Regards |

| Putting that backing on the panel is ok but you will not be able to space it off the wall at that point. I would either cut away at back or make the panels 4" thick. Note that they will NOT work if you plan on straddling corners for bass trapping. ![]()

| where did you get the idea that you dont have to build a wooden frame? The instructions show building a wooden frame for the pegboard.... Anyways....i dont like the pegboard idea, you dont need a backing at all if the panel will be hung vertically...bass traps mounted over a ceiling wall corner are a different story, you wil need something to support the weight of the insulation... heres what i did... I built a frame from MDF, slightly smaller than the dimensions of the 2' x 4' panel.....say maybe 2/16" 'smaller ( dont recall exactly)...so when i put the insulation in the frame, it fit nice and snug... Then starting with the back of the panel, i cut a piece of fabric the same size as the frame...as i was stapling it stretched it a bit to give it tension.....So the fabric essentially holds the insulation in place..between that a snug fit in the frame..insulation isnt going anywhere....then on the front, i cut the fabric big enough so that it wrapped around to the back...and again i stretched it a bit... The benefit i see from doing the way i did is that the back is the same as the rear. So when you mount it with an air gap, the back will absorb as well... with the pegboard, the back is basically blocked off from absorbing the bass..... Now....if you mount a bass trap on the ceiling over corner, or ceiling cloud..the weight of the insulation will probably be too much for the fabric. To solve this ( building my bass traps is next) other people have used angle brackets....ill try to dig up the thread where someone did that... |

| heres my panels i made....i should have done a write up on them.... i painted the frames the same color as the fabric, because the fabric was slightly transparent...as you can see in the photos, the flash from the camera exposed the rockwool underneath....in person they dont look like that lol....anyways, its the only fabric i could find here that was suitable ( we dont have big fabric stores like they do in the states)...plus its going to be somewhat dark in my room.... i still have to trim the fabric in the back and make it look pretty, i only did one with black fabric in the back...the rest have the same color both sides..in case you can see the back a bit with the air gap... ![]() ![]() ![]() heres the brackets i was talking about to hold the insulation in place.... look at post #135... How I built my bass traps... |
