Thread Starter | ethan's plans or everyone elses for bass traps?
Okay, so I see a lot of people on here making a frame and then stuffing the frame with 4" of OC703, whereas ethan's design consists of an air gap, as well as covering the face of the trap with 1/4" plywood. What are the pros and cons of both of these designs? Are the panels everyone else builds simply absorbers and not true bass traps? (the ones with just a frame filled with 4" of 703) Im just trying to figure out which ones to build... Thanks |

The traps with none wood on the front are broad band bass traps which will absorb over a wider frequency range (low end and high end). If you don't want it to absorb as much high end then you can put FRK on the fronts of them to reflect some of it. The other panels are called panel traps, which can be tuned to target a certain frequency range. Most smaller rooms have problems throughout all the frequencies so it is recommend you start with broad band and if you still have problems you can then add panel traps (tuned).

| This is in bold at the top of my panel traps article: Please understand that the bass traps described in this article are intended mainly for larger rooms. For rooms smaller than 25 by 15 feet you'll usually do better with broadband bass traps made from thick rigid fiberglass placed in the room corners. This is described in my Acoustics FAQ linked above. Once all of the corners are treated, then it makes sense to consider adding bass traps like these flat on the walls.
