good for the floor, where your listening position will be if you have a hard floor like tile or wood. not much other than that. putting it on the wall or ceiling wont do much at all. Low frequencies will pass right through it. It may absorb some of the mids and and highs...but very little. You could try hanging it as a ceiling cloud over the listening position, having a gap between the ceiling and the rug will be better than just mounting right to the ceiling. but still, not really worth the effort IMO. Its like when people put carpeting on the wall....its a myth that it works, and in a lot of cases it makes the room sound un-natural. If you want some abosorption, make some rigid fiberglass panels. Its cheap and it works. do a search on here, theres a ton of info. |

Thanks for the reply. What about using it for diffusion? |

Diffusion...not really. From the pic, the surface seems slightly irregular, but its not going to do much if anything... Real diffusion is based of calculations, its not random like you might think. And if you have ever seen pics of diffusors, they arent flat like a rug ( at least the ones i have seen) But, if you want some diffusion, put a bookcase on that back wall and fill it with books or DVDs , and set them randomly at various depths. It not "scientific" diffusion, but it wil scatter the waves. If you are on a no budget home studio, i would recommend gett a book called "Acoustic Design for the Home Studio" by Mitch Gallagher. It has a whole section on using household items, or stuff thats or dirt cheap/free, to treat your studio. But for most DIY home studio's, absorption is is usually the prefered over diffusion. |

Thanks again for the reply. Despite the seemingly naive questions, I already knew what the answers were. I'd been asked to find a way to use this rug in our studio. He insists it has to have some beneficial acoustic properties. I was hoping to get some posts here to help back up what I've been telling him. |
