Help With Room - Not Rich $$$

I drew up an amazing almost real life depiction of my room in photoshop and is attached. Its just a drawing though, I know from the high quality rendering that some people might think its a photo from the top down.

Seriously though. I have a 13X13 room. That measurement is from the edge of the closet (does not include closet space) so the drawing is not really scaled correctly. Its a basement room. The wall behind the mixing desk are concrete, the wall where the window is, is concrete. The other two walls are foam spray insulated by the builder.

Problem: I am no expert mixer, but I find that I have to mix, bounce, play on lots of systems, find the vocals are always low, then re-mix, bounce, etc. I am hoping that I can get a little better mixing accuracy with a little treatment.

So far I have neglected that part of my setup for acquiring the good gear that I needed.

Recording and tracking happens in this room as well as the mixing. For live drums and amps we run them into the next room over which is a very large concrete room.

Any advice for treating this room on the cheap is greatly appriciated.

And for anyone curious, here is the sound I get from the room currently.

13x13 is going to present some challenges for sure. Here are some tips to get you started:

• Make sure you setup so that you’re firing down the longest dimension of the room.
• Your head should be placed 38% of the way into the room, centered between the left and right walls
• Your head should also be located at the tip of an equilateral triangle with your speakers. Start at a 5’ width and go from there.
• Use at least 4” bass trapping in all the corners, floor to ceiling if possible.
• Use 4” or 6” bass traps on the back wall; the thicker the better basically.
• Use 4” panels behind the speakers on the front wall
• The reflection points to the right, left and above your head can be treated with either 2” or 4” panels. I prefer 4” panels personally; you can never really overdo bass trapping.

In your case that means moving some things around, but it'll pay big dividends if you do.

Thanks, moving things around should not be a problem at all. The rest sounds like a possible bank account breaker. '

I am guessing the corner bass traps would be a good place to start first?

For low end control, yes the corners and back wall.

Eh...if you make them it's not that bad.

Room acoustics is something that is not well understood, so educating the public is really the only way. Will I lose a guy to building themselves? Sure, but hey not everyone is interested in spending the time to build it themselves or can't. It is a win win for all of us. Guys treat there room and rave about it and in return people start to wake up to the fact that room acoustics matter. Plus it is not all about the money but what you truly enjoy doing in life. I honestly LOVE my job.

I wish I could afford you guys right now. But helping now, will get you a customer in the future. Our money is going into the new house we are building. I have a studio room in this house being built correctly and will get it the acoustics done professionally when the home is ready (9months to a year).

You will be hearing from me.

Even if you can't afford much, just doing a three or four DIY can make a big difference. People worry that they can't do much, and I'm always telling them that even if you just add a couple of panels that's 100% better than it was before.
