Gobo's Around Amps

How much will absorbtion gobo's affect the sound of guitar and bass amps?*

I'm thinking about building some 6" deep closed back gobo's using OC703. It's for the purpose of isolating guitar and bass cabinets in the live room. I'd be boxing up around the cabinets for maximum isolation. Just wondering if anyone has any insight as to what sound quality changes I should expect. I would mainly be doing close micing with this set up.*

Thanks,

Keith Moore

Lightbulb

Gobos used for isolation around amps that are close-mic'd should have little affect in the sound. Of course, it depends on how close "close" is.

One thing it will give is a very dry sound..IF your room is kinda live, but you will be amazed at the isolation it CAN produce...
Have the amps about half way up, middle of gobo..

I'd be squaring off the front of the cab with 4'x4' gobo's.

Yeah I think I can deal with it being dry. It would be for basic tracks anyway. Over dubs would be done with the open room.

For this purpose should I make them closed back or just leave them open?

So I'm getting ready to build these soon. For the purpose of isolation should I make them close back or leave them open?

Thanks

And when you are not using them you can put them in the corners as bass traps.

Hey Glenn if I may I have one more question to bother you with. Would it be beneficial in any way to create a 2" gap between the closed back and the OC703?

I have some made from 2" duct board (closed back) and used them for the exact purpose of isolating an amplifier. I was amazed at how well it worked, and how well the trackes turned out. I have a single room operation right now, and I wanted to really dial in the guitar tone, and be able to monitor it live simultaneously. It worked fantastic, and the guitar player loved not having to wear headphones to track his parts. We just monitored live and it worked great.

Yeah, and that's about $1000 worth of material there.
