are mondotraps worth the extra $$$ ?

Are the worth it? Yes, but only if you have enough money and plan on buying the same amount. Meaning if your on a budget and can only get 4 mondos, your better off getting more of the mini traps.
More is always better, so let your pocket book guide you.

The way I explain it is MondoTraps are the better choice when 1) performance matters more than cost, or 2) when the wife says "No way are you putting more than two of those ugly bass traps in my living room!" So in the second case, with only a few traps total, you want each trap to be as big and bad as possible.

Bottom line, the same number of dollars goes farther with MiniTraps. So for people with a limited budget, more MiniTraps is better than fewer MondoTraps.
