Hey guys... I was talking to a couple of friends today about building bass traps, and trying to find a source for 703/705, and one guy mentioned that his roommate has a basement full of traps that he built. So, I called the kid... it sounds like he had a pretty decent studio at his house, and recently had to let the house go back to the bank, so he pulled all of the treatment back out. He has 40+ pieces of assorted size/shape (corners, wall panels, ceiling panels, etc) that he made himself. He doesn't remember the density, but it was all built with mineral wool from ATS (it was whatever they recommended to him), the frames are pine, and they're covered with "a nice burlap". I don't know what size the corners are, but every thing else was built with at least 2'x4' panels, and some of it's 2" and some of it's 4". I haven't seen any of these (I'm supposed to go check them out next week), so I don't know how well they're built, but what do you suppose would be a fair price for them per piece? He's talking in the neighborhood of $15 to $20... Thanks in advance!!! Steve |

If you think you can build them cheaper, figuring in your time, make them look as nice or better, then..... well you get the point. Look and decide. Sounds like a deal to me. Where else can you get already made panels at that price? Only if they're ugly!!!!! Although most are nicely done around here, I've seen some fabric covering that looks like the teenager has still yet to learn how to make a bed and fold corners! |

If they are nicely done, sounds like a jackpot. But lowball him a bit just to see how low he'll go.

I would make sure he built them right. No covering on the back and so on.

Sounds pretty good, if the material is 4" thick. Just realize that they are probably all mid-high absorbers, not bass traps. |

You could add pywood, or heavy cardboard, or whatever, and "get down" tp 70hz, but the amount of sabine absorption at that frequency would be inconsequential. 703's absorption drops like a stone below 125Hz. The only way to turn the stuff into an effective bass trap is to put it INSODE a bass trap, where all it's doing is adjusting the Q of the trap. | |
