Superchunks - how small and still effective?

Well, I just made some bass trap panels, but I think I'll have to make some superchunks as well.
However, I don't have very much space between my studio station and the corners, so I was wondering how small the superchunks can be without losing efficiency...?

Will superchunks in the size of 25 x 25 x 35 cm (9.8 x 9.8 x 13.8 ") be making any difference in my room - or would they be to small?

I think it would be a bit to small. I like 17"x17"x24". If you have to go smaller it is better then nothing though.

Ok. Thanks for your reply.

I'll have to see how far out I can pull my studio station without messing the room up too much...
It would also be a lot easier to make them 17" - it's just cutting rockwool batts into 4 triangles (instead of 8)...

:-)

Does anyone have some advice on how to make some portable superchunks?
Maybe some pictures?

If I just wrap some cloth around some stacked rockwool-triangles - it stay in shape, so tho speak, will it?

Hey, it just so happens that I'm in the process of making a pair of portable superchunks. One of them is mostly finished and I can post some pictures tomorrow. With rockwool, you'll need a frame, especially if you're using the lower density stuff like I am. It's fairly easy though and you don't need super thick wood either. The ones I'm making are 50cm x 80 cm with a ~92cm face. Anyway, I'll post some pics tomorrow that will hopefully help you out.

Cool. Thaks a lot!

I don't think I'll be using rockwool with very high density.
I have some socalled flexi batts left that I'll be making the superchunks of.

It would be nice to see some pictures, but I would think just building a frame with the mineral wool in side with fabric around it, would be the way to go.

Yeah, definitely.

However, good ideas are always welcome...

Here's what I've got so far. I still need to put braces on top and then cover the thing in fabric. The plywood is thin (8mm) as well as the vertical wood (12mm). The two pieces on the corner are glued and screwed together.

Wow!
Great idea with the wheels.

Hm... actually I was thinking about just making a very light frame, since my chunks are gonna be smaller anyway - but you're constructions look very cool...

If you want something lighter, you could try using metal corner bead that is used for drywall. I'm sure I've seen someone here do that but here's another example using it to make panels.

The wheels work fine, but acoustically it would be better to have the insulation go all the way to the floor. It's just one of many compromises I've had to make.
