3" 703 bass traps, etc

I bought my 703 in 1" thick 4x8 sheets. I used 2x4x1" pine boards for framing. Since the nominal width of the pine is actually 3.5 inches VS 4", I only fit 3" thick of the 703. Plus it allowed for a brace, not creating a thickness more than the framework.

I did the same for all my traps, put in quite a bit in my room, made a huge difference.

...and I read almost exclusively, you need 4" min in corners and that 2" is fine for reflection points.

Do you think there is any benefit increasing my corner 3" traps to more (tack another 1" on the back of the frame), OR stuffing fluff stuff in the corners..

Or just make more traps?

I'm inclined to just keep making a pile more of these 3" traps.

Lightbulb

Having more traps is better than the same number only thicker. But thicker is good too. See my Density Report for a direct comparison of six 6" thick traps versus twelve 3" thick traps.

"So what can we learn from these graphs? First, it's evident that for all of the fiberglass types it's better to have twelve thinner panels spread more completely around the room than only six thicker panels covering less total surface area."

Yes...I read that first prior to my construction, and figure I'm going for total coverage and the 3" panels are easy to make.

Thanks for the reply (5 minutes after my post!)

[ First post, hi all ]

mixmkr, I think your amp-matching panels are great thumbsup

I may steal that idea from you for my upcoming room treatment.

Yea we did some panels like that for a guy one time. They really do look pretty cool. Fabric though is pretty pricey.

Actually a piece of Marshall or Fender grillcloth isn't that much. Maybe $30 for a panel. That'd be about another $15 more than using a decent material per trap.

At any rate, since it makes my studio sound about $25,000 better, it's kinda a moot point.

That said, I've got a piece of Vox grillcloth that was about twice that price. And of course, generic grillcloth basically costs less than the gas it takes to go pick it up in town!

I wished I had bought larger "logos", but what the hey. Most singer/musicians that record here don't know squat about gtr amps!

They're more "wowed" by the groovey shock mounts and pop screens on their vocal mics.

Looks like a pretty heavy frame. I used to do this very lite kind of design;

Then just put "wool" inside the plastic frame and wooden frame over it.

Then fabric

You can even get very creative . Here's fabric painting, what i did is put simple panel inside it frames. Much better looking.

Painting on the wall.

I've got so small room (and crappy sounding) that it makes me think all kinds of solutions .

The problem we had is we had to run the fabric long ways so there was a lot of waste. Plus our 242 panel is around $59.00, so adding $30.00 (actually it was a bit more) per panel just seems high. But yes it is a moot point as it does make it not only sound $25,000 better but also look a ton better also.
