Aluminium diffusors

Hello all,

I recently acquired 3 aluminum diffusion panels. They are approx 3' x 6' made of punched aluminum with a plastic wrapped 2" piece of insulation slotted in behind. They also have mounting hardware that puts them 6- 8" off of the wall or ceiling.

I'm still in the process of building some 6" thick bass traps for the corners of my room (10' x 13' - 8' flat ceiling)

I cannot find any information regarding these panels. I'm also a novice so I would welcome advice on using these panels (pro or con) and suggestions on where to mount them.

Thanks Aaron

I have never seen anything like that and from what I can tell it really is not a true diffusor. Might though brake up a bit of flutter though.

They put these in band and orchestra rehearsal rooms at schools. While it may reflect some higher frequencies, it's really a rugged, durable absorber/trap.

It just protects the 703/705 behind it (you know how important this can be with band geeks...).

Thanks for the replies Glenn & tINY!

I acquired them in a trade...they remind me of the "quiet" room at our local science centre (which is also made from punched metal)...if you talk close to them they seem to absorb the sound - that is my voice seems "flat" with no resonance etc.

The guy that had them worked in TV and film sound engineering and said they came from a production studio...(he certainly had nicer gear at his house than I do) though what do I know eh?

They do have an insulated insert (in behind)...though it is PLASTIC wrapped and only about 2 inched thick.

I guess my main concern was that the aluminum itself would add the the room sound - but in a bad way - or that the plastic wrapping would make any dampening ineffectual.

I'm going to put some 6" deep 2'x4' bass traps in the four corners of the room stacked to 8" high (I know I was on the forums before going on about sheep's wool- but my dad convinced me to go with rockwool and speaker cloth!)

I was thinking of attaching these to the back wall- which would be to the performers back.

tINY- thanks for the links.

Glenn - Thanks for the room models on your website...they've helped me a lot. I really like the new "picture" traps. Do you make any of your designs with rockwool or just rigid fiberglass?

Be careful not to over-dampen the performance area if you'll be doing and acoustic instruments. A too-dead area is hard to play in without a cue mix.
