Absorber gobo's where to put them for vocal tracking?

Hi all,

I made two large freestanding gobo-like broadband absorbers for the purpose of remedy for reducing reverberation and possibly reducing the bad effects of a small-medium room.

I have 2 of these gobos and they are 100cm by 200cm and 4 inches thick with 45kg.m2 rockwool (forgot the exact model number but its the one that is recommended for broadband absorption on this forum and other online discussion groups).

The question: How to position them? My initial instinct tells me one should definitely be behind the vocalist to prevent reverberation, and also my logic tells me second one could be behind the microphone to prevent the dry signal from reacing the walls. Any ideas?

Cheers,
Emre

You pretty much just want to get them around the mic and person singing.

Thanks for the answer. Is it better to put them behin the mic in a V shape or behind the singer? (I am assuming a cardiod pattern on the mic here)

You would want to put them in front of the singer.

Best is behind the microphone as shown in the photo below. If the absorption is in front of the singer, their voice is absorbed right there, before it has a chance to get out into the room and bounce around.

Thank you very much both to you and to Glenn, that was exactly what was trying to understand. Whether it is better to absorb it before it bounces off the walls or to absorb the voice already reflected..and you answered it with this photo excellently! Thanks
