Thread Starter | Wood size for Bass Traps (help please)
It would be my first time making anything myself, so I was wondering if anyone of you sluts would be willing to lend a helping hand with suggestions. I am considering buying wood from my local home depot, since it's not as expensive as I expected. I want to make 4 foot x 2 foot bass traps and have each one be 4 inches deep (fill it with owens corning). These are the 2 different options I have (cost the same): 1. COST: $3 -1inch X 4 inch X 8 Feet - Pressure Treated BOARD - WeatherShield 1 In. x 4 In. x 8 Ft. Pressure Treated Board - LU 64131 8 at The Home Depot 2. COST: $3 -2inch X 4 inch X 8 Feet - Pressure Treated LUMBER - WeatherShield 2 In. x 4 In. x 8 Ft. Pressure Treated Lumber - LU 53842 8 at The Home Depot Now I could get either one, but I was wondering if the 1x4 inch BOARD would be too weak or flimsy, OR if the 2x4 inch LUMBER would be too thick to work with. I have never worked with wood before, so I'm completely lost here. Any input would be of great help. Thanks for your time. |

1x2 inch lumber with 3 cross braces should be enough... There are many bass trap threads here... I suggest using the search function, or just open the threads about the subject. That said, I recommend the "simplest" framing possible. There is at least one thread here that demonstrates using 1x2 furring strips with "brackets" to frame 2x4 foot OC703 panels. Your depth is dictated by how many 703 panels deep, and having enough fabric to attach the panels to the frame. Frame should be BEHIND and the same length and width as the panels. This facilitates stapling the fabric to the back, and something to "hang" on a wall or from the ceiling... Does that help? Either way, there are many photos of this and other ideas in the section called Studio construction & acoustics. |

I made all mine for both rooms like this : Easy 1hr Trap and Cloud On the 2nd batch I made I just used a staple gun to put the frames together. The wood is mainly held in place with the fabric and it definitely keeps the cost down but is still stable enough.
