mystery material. what is it?!

i got this mystery material out of some office cubical walls, and i was wondering if anyone could have a look and tell me if it looks like 703 or some other kind of rigid fiberglass. i cut it up and wrapped fabric around 'em. i can do a little test, like put a mic up to the monitor, record some pink noise, then record the exact same thing with same placement with the material between. if youll listen to it, ill do it. thanks!

No problem. You could stack them up to make 4" panels which you can straddle corners for bass trapping.

What is it that allows you to identify it as OC 703 or 705, and not some other company? I have four cubicle partitions myself that I'm trying to identify the insulation as well.

The color and the pattern on one side and not the other are traits that would lead one to the conclusion that it likely is 703 or 705.

To distinguish (as an OC product), one would only need the dimensions and the weight of the material. It should weigh in at 3lbs/cu ft.

I plan on dismantling the cubicle partitions this weekend. I can definitely attempt to weigh them as you've mentioned to check the density. I guess with the right density, who cares who made it.

But you mention there will be a pattern on one side and not on the other. Can you describe this pattern so I may anticipate what I may see?

Well, I disassembled some cubicle partitions yesterday and they actually weighed in around 5.6 lbs/ft^3. Would that make it OC 705? I read it was 6 lbs/ft^3, and I figure I can attribute the small variance in my calculation to the sensitivity of the scale I was using.

Hi, acoustics noob here, this seemed the best thread to ask this question...

Owens Corning 703/705, R-30, etc..

Which should I buy for bass trap building? I keep seeing "rock wool" but when I mentioned that name to the guy at Lowe's he had never heard of it. So what should I really be asking for?

"Rock Wool" is a trademarked brand name. The generic term is mineral wool.

How deep are your bass traps? For up to 8" deep, ask for "3 lb/cu ft glass wool or 4 lb/cu ft mineral wool. You can go somewhat higher or lower, but those are standard densiities.
