| Gear maniac | So I think I'm just going to give in and buy some pre made panels.
Ive been looking around at various sites and I think the GIK room kid #1 is going to be my best bet. I've decided on going to pre-made route so that everything will match and look better together, and that later on I can add pieces and not have to worry that the appearance is going to be different. The only problem is how pricey it is. Does anyone know an alternative? I only know of GIK and Real traps but real traps are even more expensive.

Yeah, if RealTraps cost more than you can justify spending, definitely go with GIK. --Ethan

Both Real Traps and GIK are great addition to your room. I went with GIK and it was worth every penny. Glenn and Ethan have provided a vast amount of information and even guide you if you go the DIY route. Real Traps and GIK are much better looking than any DIY rig I've seen, IMO. See my pics below. your experience from non-treated recording room to ... |

Man!!! Not to dog GIK, (I really don't Glen) or whoever but $350!!!!???? for one panel? I think I should go into production (not really) but dude? I did not even see the pics of these before but I made some that resemble the "everything panel" deal for about $25 and they work like a charm! All you need is 2"x4"x8" pine or whatever wood, and whatever size the area needs. As much of the $2.00/yard fabric bin fabric at Walmart (they get a truckload in everyday so keep checking if they don't have the right fabric for the job...they usually do) and 2 pieces of rock-wool (if you know where to get it), or R-30 and Shazam! You can make about 10 of those panels for the same price. They are not gong to be specTROMiterIllIZATIONaly the exact same, but you will be amazed by the absorptive quality. Just make sure to keep a gap between the wall and the back of the panel, equal to the width of the panel (just hang on a "L" bracket.Since there is not that much space to cover, you can get Gilford of Maine fabric online for $15/yd, or some fancy looking stuff wherever you can find it (just take into consideration if fire ******ant is needed) and your off to see the wizard... I added a few dif sizes and kinds to show how easy it is to customize your panels to your needs for cheap. And believe me, my room has been acoustically transformed, it sounds great!! Besides, do yo have any idea how much hookers and blow $350 can buy??? JI can't stand either one but it's a good point. I thought I heard some magic. |

Well neither Glenn nor GiK needs my humble support, but DUDE what panels for $350 are YOU talkin' 'bout?! The last I checked you can get 2 ,yep that's right 2 - 24x48x2" panels for less than $150 USD!!!! Did you get your math education in public schools? How about a little decorum DUDE!!!!???? Btw, I don't own ANY GiK products ,just so you won't think I am sucking up to a good company for some kind of freebies!!!!Quote:

DIY traps are definitely cheaper, especially if you just throw together a wood frame, stuff it with rockwool, and cover it with cloth. We do have a $350 bass trap, but it's made with 705 (4x more expensive than rockwool), and a very high-quality, complex metal frame that costs more to make than an entire wood/cloth/rockwool trap. It performs very well of course, but it also looks fantastic. This is why it's so expensive, to get pro-looking traps that also perform very well have a high cost of materials and a complex, labor-intensive assembly. But if you have more time than money, definitely do DIY. If you're a good, careful craftsman you can make some decent-looking stuff if you use good materials and proven designs.

RPG sells 2x4 foot bass traps for $1,000. Some ASC tube traps are nearly that pricey. Hey, you gets what you pays for. What you also gets with some of the higher end companies is better advice than, say, the foam sellers on eBay. --Ethan |

+1 for GIK Great value for money...honestly don't think I could have made panels as good for less money than they cost...but then I didn't have to pay shipping :D

| Gear Head | Why yes... It is a very low end ASS TRAP. It has 2 half-moon columns for between 20-200, a mid-range biscuit absorber, very effective at 1k, and a high freq bean module for ultra-highs. They have very tight characteristics. They aren't cheap though. They are available on a monthly payment plan that is ongoing, with no end in sight to ever bring the account current, unless you get rid of them all together. But very fun to use. And ads a delightful DECORUM to any studio. Last edited by tubalicious; 29th August 2009 at 04:17 PM.. Reason: typo |
