Thread Starter | suggestions for treating my room
Hello, This is my first post and I've read a ton of stuff on this forum. Very helpful and informative. I'm pretty handy so I'll be making this stuff myself. I finished my basement myself, minus the plaster and installing the carpet. view from back ![]() view from front ![]() Room is 22 x 26 ft deep bumps out 6 feet at the back. Ceiling is 8' with parts 7'. The ceiling and walls are insulated with r19. Viewing area is 16' wide to the pillar x 12'. Couch is moving forward and a set of surrounds will be mounted on the pillar at 13' and side wall. Front wall is 58" high and speakers & tv will be replaced. 100% home theater use only. I have a ton of sports memorabilia to get hung up on the walls and am waiting to do that after I get a plan of what to put where to help with the acoustics. The far back corner 32' away has a terrible booming of bass sound and the left corner of the front wall has okay bass and as you move along that sidewall towards the back the bass almost disappears as you get about 8' back from the front wall until you get 2/3 of the way to the back of the room. Not sure if the pillars are causing this? Here are my initial thoughts and looking for suggestions of good, bad, etc. #1. The front 2 corner walls, corner by card table and way back corner I was going to make triangular traps stacked up about 4 feet tall with oak base/top. #2. I have a 4' wide by 2' tall oak display case with glass shelves, mirrored back, with a glass enclosed front. I need to make a stand for it and was thinking the base stuff 703 in it all around 2-4" think. Where is a good placement for this? I was thinking either wall behind card table, way back wall, side wall towards the front or front wall left of tv. #3. 2x4 panels behind front speakers What would be better for those 2" 703 no space tight to the wall, 1" 703 with a 2' frame with 1" gap tight to the wall? #4. The back wall by the card table is 8' wide. Should I do 2 2x4 bass traps or would one 2x4 horizontal work? I was thinking having that printed of the bowl of Lambeau Field with some other sport stuff on the wall. What about the rest of the walls, any suggestions? Also the long soffit with the pillars will have a bunch of 8" x10" autographed framed photos hanging on it. Would that be bad, if so I'd put them in back of the room on the walls? Pictures of my room can be viewed on photo bucket. Pictures by 2packer - Photobucket Sorry for the long book, but I wanted to give as much detail as I possibly could. |

Jesus Christ, man... A little tip... cut the description and post the pictures at the top. That way we can see what you mean and not have to read like 8 paragraphs... You're lucky I'm bored. As far as I can tell I think you may be over-thinking the treatment a little bit. It's really not as difficult as audiophiles make it out to be. Keep in mind that the human body is 11 times better at absorbing sound than traditional treatment. Weird right? I was shocked... I like your idea to build soundproofing into the entertainment center.... I think that's what you said. Again, I almost fell asleep while reading. A few bass traps in the rear corners will help, yes. Just make sure you don't forget that sound doesn't just travel straight, so try and work something out with the side walls as well. Seeing as how you are in a basement you are already in a great environment for harvesting sound. And like I said before, people work the best, so just have plenty of people over.. ![]() Keep posting, just trim the fat. Hope I helped a little. |

I added the pics and shortened it up some. I'll take a look at it later and see if I can shorten it up some more. Thanks for your input. |

As far as I can tell you are on the right track. You can follow this guide to give you all the placement spots. GIK Acoustics: Room Setup
