General question

Does using just a small set of nearfields (like NS10's with no sub) diminish the acoustics of the room and require less treatment?

As of now, I have 9 bass traps (Realtraps and Gik), skyline diffusion on the back wall and the proper mount of absorption. But I'm still having bass issues.

I'm thinking of getting rid of my monitors and getting NS10's and a nice Bryston.

Opinions?

No.

Run a HPF on your main outs at about 300Hz and most of your issues will clear up, though.

Try moving forward and back to see if you get more bass. If so then it is how you are setup, if it does not get any better then it is the monitors.

iTINY already gave you the right answer - No. I have seen this recommended a few times, but it makes no sense. Yes, you won't hear low bass problems anymore, but you won't hear any low bass either. So foot steps and other rumbling type noises that should be high-passed out when mixing will end up in the track because you couldn't hear them. All in all it's a bad idea, along the lines of cutting off your nose to spite your face.

That's the point. If your room has problems, and you find a speaker (or EQ) that "solves" the problems, you are not getting a clear picture of what is going on.

This is fine for listening to Sheena Easton while winding down after a hard day, but is a bad strategy for mixing.

Oooohhh...Sheena Easton would sound bad with a 300Hz HPF.

Found a pair of NS10m's, a 75w yamaha amp and a CD players for the silly price of $60 some months ago.. An offer I certainly couldn't refuse! Have heard the NS10's in various rooms before and never been that impressed. In my well treated mastering room, they actually sound surprisingly good! The bass end can be heard too, albeit very low, as they roll off gently below the 70Hz cutoff. That I attribute to tons of bass trapping - not the speakers!
