Thread Starter | I have sometimes seen a cloud hanging from 4 points in the ceiling made of fabric (sort of like a hammock?) Can anyone advise what type of material to use for this. It is for a 13 feet x 14 feet room with an 8 foot ceiling. I have quite a few Realtraps installed already but i'm hearing what i think may be modal ringing quite loudly on 1 note when i clap my hands in a fairly large section of the room. Thank you for any advice. |

| I suspect what you may be interpreting as a modal ring in response to a hand clap may instead be a case of flutter echo as a result of parallel surface...but of course this is just speculation based on prior experience... |

Thread Starter | Thank you for that. Yes it is occurring at parallel surfaces. I have a fair amount of traps (13 so far) in the room and now that section is the only remaining parallel surface. I will be narrowing the section slightly when i place a panel each side of the listening position (and above). I also have 2 remaining HF minitraps left to place. They were to be for the ceiling over a 6 and 1/2 foot grand piano but now i'm wondering should i put them at the listening position also. |

| Remember that there is a reflection point on the ceiling between you and the monitors that should be treated. Don't just put the absorbers over your head, center them at the reflection point on the ceiling. -tINY |

Thread Starter | Thanks tINY. I was only planning to put a single 4 foot x 2 absorber (Realtrap RFZ panel) at the reflection point on the ceiling. Is that enough for overhead? |

| Depends on how much distance there is between your speakers, your speakers and your head, and the height of the ceiling. How big you want your RFZ to be comes into play here too. I build a cloud for my living room recently that was 4'x8'.... -tINY |

Thread Starter | Speakers about 5 feet apart. Ceiling is 8ft high. At the moment the cloud is just 1 RFZ panel 4.5feet x 2.5feet |

| How far is your head from the center of the speakers, how far from the ceiling are your head and speakers? Draw a ray diagram. Or, mount a mirror on the ceiling and see if the speakers are visible.... -tINY |

I did the mirror trick. Found it tricky to even see the speakers when mirror was on the ceiling.

| Assuming your head is 4' from the ceiling as well, the cloud should be 2.5 feet from the speakers' center point. With your dimensions, 4' wide is probably fine. -tINY |

I'm interested in how the calculations are worked out. For example with the room approximately 13 feet x 14 feet with 8 foot ceiling how far apart from each other should the monitors be? Is there an average distance i.e. 6 feet? My monitors are facing down the 'long end' :-) How far should the monitors be out from the wall? With all the gear i have in the room there does need to be a compromise though.

| There are different theories. In the end, it's about what works in your situation... For rules of thumb, check out Ethan Winer's site. -tINY |
