Thread Starter | How is this tracking area?
I'm putting the finishing touches on my home studio, and would love to get some feedback on this tracking area. I'm doing mostly vocals and some ac gtr. Floors are carpeted and ceilings are 8'. Area dimensions are approx: 6'x9'x4'x5' Forming the side of the booth are 3 Minitraps mounted on mic stands. Attached to the back wall is 2" foam. The front and side is 2" OC covered with the 2" foam. I will be hanging the 2' x4' framed OC panel (pictured) between the cured foam and fan-- just above the mic. Here's my questions: - Is it ok to have the foam curled up the wall/ceiling as pictured? - Is the ceiling fan/light ok or should I remove it? - Is it advisable to close up the booth or is the gaped entrance ok? - Is the exposed wall near floor ok, or should that be covered? - Are 1/4" plywood floor pieces recommended for ac gtr tracking? - Do I need more absorption on ceiling in front of fan? Thanks for taking the time to help me out with this! |

| You probably don't want the fan on when recording - other than that, it's probably OK. If you treat the ceiling, the 1/4 plywood is a good idea. If you leave the floor carpeted, you can use the ceiling as your live surface... -tINY |

I'd probably put one MiniTrap in the corner to maximize bass absorption. Also, the MiniTraps are "reversible," one side is completely absorptive and the other is semi-reflective. Take a moment and experiment and see which arrangement sounds better for each application.

tINY is pretty much right on IMO. Personally, I prefer a hard floor/soft ceiling but in a smaller space like this, something portable like that will work great and minimize a nightmare the rest of the time. The foam in the corner is OK but really isn't doing much quite honestly - other than killing the horn effect. Bryan

Some of my thoughts on it.... - Is it ok to have the foam curled up the wall/ceiling as pictured? Doesn't make much of a difference other than to kill some highs a little bit - Is the ceiling fan/light ok or should I remove it? I'd just keep it ![]() - Is it advisable to close up the booth or is the gaped entrance ok? Actually, from my experience, I never liked a closed up booth that much. Just experiment to positioning to see what sounds best thru the mic... - Are 1/4" plywood floor pieces recommended for ac gtr tracking? Most studios I work in have wooden floors -- which I think are great for recording instruments! Oh, and thanks for the Akai S6000! It was in super great shape when I bought it from you and I'm using it a lot these days! ![]() Just wish I could've bought the SE1x too! e hee

That could work, but I was thinking the wall/wall corner where you are tracking.
