hi everyone! im planning to build bass trap panels for my small room and im wondering if its okay to use insulation fibers rather than using rockwool/rigid fiberglass, its hard to find rockwool here in my place, all i could find are fiber insulations... would 4" of fiber insulation be as effective as 4" of rockwool? any ideas on how i could possible make one? thanks in advance! |

are you talking about insulation such as r30? I used the same and am wondering the same thing. Mine is 9" thick but i compressed it into some homemade panels that are 5" thick. Im wondering as well if this is a good idea?

Compressed fluffy insulation works fine, but it's more work to do that and it doesn't have clean edges and a smooth front. Some people use chicken wire to make the front surface look better and smoother. --Ethan

Just to add. Use about 12" of the fluffy stuff to make it 4" thick. Glenn

hey are there any other proportions of the compressed fluffy stuff that are adequate...say compressing 9" down to 2", etc? Also, are u saying that compressing 12" of pink fluffy down to 4" is the equivalent of 4" of 703 maybe? 2" of 703"? THANKS! |

| it depends on the initial pcf. ex OC r-30 9" has an overll density at 0.5. half that and the denisty double to one ant its 4.5". and half( sayin that u compress) to 2.25" the its 2pcf. and to get at least a 3pcf like the OC 703 then the 9" should compressed to 1.125" to get a 4pcf panel to work with. tip if u do decide on on what depth, then pick a multiple of 9 and comprees(half) accordingly. I the overall depth( height when stacked of the OC ) 27.5". i know not a clean multiple of 9, where the pcf can be calculated easily, but i based it of the material i was using since i didnt want to spend much and fortunately for me it exactly the biggest width of the lumber i used. so it was compressed 3.375" giving me a panel of that thickness at 4pcf . did it make a difference yes, is it really effective idk, but will do more research for a future build and ask question on this forum, cuz it rocks( newb here)
