Thread Starter | Will these Acoustic Panels work for my studio?
Hi folks I have managed to obtain 22 of these ceiling panels from a small theatre - pictures attached suspended from ceiling. They are rougly 3ft long by 1.5ft wide. From what I gather, they are wooden panels with 2 inch thick fiber inside. I cannot tell what sort of fiber it is but it looks like industrial wool but is very soft and squishy (i.e. doesn't fee like rigid like the panels of my realtraps PVB). I had hoped to use them as room panels and bass traps - perhaps bass traps by putting two behind each other into the corners and place the other panels on walls. I am wondering if they will work adequately as bass traps and room panels. Moroever, given that each panel has 2 inch thick fiber inside, how many I would need to stack for bass traps etc. On a final note, given that the face of them is very heavily covered by the wooden frame, is it better to remove some of the wood off the front of the frame so more of the fabric and fiber is exposed? Is this necessary? Doesn't bass travel through anything anyway? My room is 15 ft long x 10.5ft wide x 7.8ft high. Thanks |

IMHO, 2" thick soft wool combined with the very little open airspace in the front is not a very good combination. But they are a great starting point being a very good frame. I would cut out the slots to form large openings. I would probably keep the center beam for stiffness forming two large square openings. And I would add two more inches of rockwool to them. Your ceiling height isn't that high so it isn't very feasible to mount the ceiling traps leaving a large gap behind. But leaving a considerable gap makes the back of the trap function as well, both absorbing whatever energy passes through the trap bouncing at the ceiling AND soundwaves hitting the ceiling directly, between the traps. |

Sasi Thanks for your response. What if I turned them around so the front frame was facing the corner or wall and the fabric side was facing the room - and moreover, what if I removed one of the fabric wool "bags" from another panel and then stuck that in front of the already fabric facing side so there are two lots of 2inch fabric wool? Does this make sense? Would I therefore have 4 inches of fabric/wool facing the room and the frame facing the wall or corner? Have I missed the point? |

It´s all a matter of ( I´m not an expert, but...) balance between frequencies. Seems you have a good amount of 2" traps, what isn´t enough for the low frequencies. For an effective absorption in the lows (below 100hz) you should consider at least 4" for corner traps/reflection points and 6" in the rear wall. And download Room Eq Wizard software (free) and measure the room+monitors frequencie response (plus waterfalls) to know what is happening. Ciro |
