did i use too much R30 insulation in my ceiling

hey guys,

this is my first time on this side of the forum so please bare with me

i am about to redo my room as it is not working for me as mixes do translate well especially on the bottom end...seems to have something funky going on around 150hz

anyway is starting over the first question i have is that i have a false ceiling in the room with basic armstrong office ceiling tiles. a friend suggested that i put some r30 insulation up there so i stuffed it in...probably got about 18 inches of it up there from the front wall to about 80% of the back wall. basically 2 layers on the insulation but towards the back of the room just one layer.

the room also gets really warm or really cold with the central ac. no inbetween

is this too much or too little?

i admit that i am and idiot when it come to studio construction and this kind of stuff.

any thoughts or help would be useful as i've got to fix my room. after all what is the point of me having bryston pwr amps, 1073's and pt hd if my room sucks?

thanks,

ej

It is not too little but there are A LOT of other things you need to do with your room. Start with

*Making sure that you are facing the short wall and start by sitting (your mix spot) around 38% of the room length of the room.

*Places bass traps (made of rigid fiber glass or mineral wool) in as many corner corners as possible.

*Place thinner panels in the early reflection points What Are Early Reflection Points. SPOTLIGHT:Bob Ebeling - Revolution Studio

*Thick absorption (once again rigid fiberglass or mineral wool based) with diffusion on the back wall.

Take a read of a room set up that Frank did here. It will give you some ideas on how to go about treating your room. GIK Acoustics

Also the following page has a nice layout of mix spot with placement of bass traps, diffusion and panels for the early reflection points.GIK Acoustics: Room Setup

thanks for the advice.

have done most of what you have suggested.

with the r30 insulation i have in the ceiling...it has a paper backing so when it put it up in the ceiling i left the paper backing on an let the paper backed side facing the floor as it was easier to install that way.

is this ok?

there is about a 4" to 6" in air gap between the insulation and the real ceiling. is this ok as well? if i removed one layer i could have maybe a 16" air gap or i could add one more layer toget more material up there.

any thoughts?

thanks

I don't see anything wrong with any of that. Looks fine to me. You've got plenty of airspace at 6" I think.

Are you detecting a null or a peak? Could it be the front wall null? Take the speed of sound (1130ft/sec) and divide it by four, then take that quotient and divide it by the distance between the speakers and the wall. If that's 150 or close to 150, it could be your answer.

That's fine for everywhere except reflection points:
