Thread Starter | Safety Using Owens Corning 703
Hi guys,
I'd like to put together two DIY traps with OC 703 in a little studio with no ventilation. Is this suicidal stupidity? Must I do it in a ventilated spot with a mask and gloves? Sorry for the newbie message.
Thanks,
Jim

Yes it is insistent death. Don't worry you will not know what hit you.
No your fine, just use mask and so on. thumbsup

ALWAYS use a Mask when handling this stuff. It will burn your throat, nose and skin.
Rigid Fiberglass is actually not much better than asbestos Fibers. If you looked at them under a microscope, they look like little hooks. Once they go into your body, they aren't coming out.
Having spent years in the construction/contracting industry trust me when I say Wear a Mask! (And a good one too!)

From the site I link to in that post^^ (Naima.org reference) Fiber glass is fundamentally different from asbestos, both in its physical and chemical properties. Fiber glass is a man-made material. In contrast, asbestos is a naturally occurring, inorganic fiber. Our bodies can remove most types of fiber glass through a variety of mechanisms (it dissolves in the lungs, for example), while asbestos is more durable and stays in the body a lifetime. The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH), representing over 1,600 academic and government officials engaged in occupational safety and health programs, estimates that MMVFs are hundreds of times less durable in the body than asbestos.
To the OP:
I'd definitely wear gloves for sure, and if you can stand the heat, wear jeans and a long sleeve shirt. While you won't die from it, you will be inconveniently itchy when you are done. If I'm feeling especially safe, I wear a mask, but very often not. Just don't stick your nose up to it and inhale fervently every few minutes.

Mask for sure. Long pants, long sleeve shirt(s), gloves and goggles. Toss the clothes when finished...

No need to throw clothing away!!!!
Just wash the clothes!
And wash your exposed skin (hopefully a minimum amount) in COLD water.
Folks, simple common sense and reasonable precautions are more than adequate! One would think someone is contemplating entering Chernobyl rather than taking very simple precautions to minimize exposure - and if you are exposed, relax and wash!
Just avoid eating too much of the stuff. wear clothing sufficient to minimize exposed skin and avoid intentionally breathing the dust by using a simple dust mask!
Simple due diligence!
And one wonders just what someone is doing if they are generating THAT much fiberglass dust???? Folks who blow fiberglass insulation into attics don't experience the histrionics that this topic evokes here where MOST are simply handling and perhaps cutting semi-rigid panels with BINDER!
