Thread Starter | Useful alternative to plain old fibreglass slabs?
After a bit of googling I came across a supplier of rockwool and fibreglass products in my area. I also noted their other products including something they are calling "Element Herakustik star 25/MW" Seems to be a slab of 100mm rockwool with a woodfibre panel glued to one side. The absorption graph looks pretty good showing 0.8 @ 125hz, 1@500Hz - And its pretty flat I'd be interested in hearing any comments. (indeed there are some other products that might be of interest) data here... http://www.skanda-uk.com/PDF/PRODUCT%20DATA.pdf more info found under Home->Products ->acoustic homepage here... I don't know the price but I've spoken to the company and it seems they have a chap who understands about acoustics - certainly a refreshing change from your average insulation supplier! He emailed me some docs for a similar product where the woodfibre board is thicker at 50mm, mineral wool is 100mm. He sent test measurements - an absorption graph - it looks even better. It shows an absorption coefficient of 1 for 125hz (!!) and pretty flat to 800hz. Then it dips down to 0.5 around 1250Hz and back to 0.8 or so by 2.5k. Rather an odd place for a dip I thought - but a super bass absorber. I can't help wondering if this is too good to be true. Could it be effectively a damped resonating panel? Even if its twice the price of rockwool might it be worth it? hmm... Another thought I had was that the wood-wool panel will make easy mounting and you'll get lovely crisp edges when covered in fabric (if indeed, that is needed - I think you can get the wood side in different colours). I believe it is often used for cladding large rooms like gymnasiums. I'd love to hear any further "gut felt " thoughts on this stuff. I'll report back with prices when I get them cheers |
