Thread Starter | Low ceiling question
OK my basement box of a studio is about 12X20 but the ceiling is super low about 6' 4". I was wondering the best way to deal with these low ceilings. Right now the joists are covered with 5X9 thin wood slates throughout. There are 9 inches above to the upper floor so I was thinking maybe I should remove the wood slates, stuff fiberglass in & cover with material?? Or should I just hang something above the mix position? Being only 6'4" it can't be too think or I'll be bashing into it as I stand up! lol Cheers Sean |

Yeah, no doubt, man! Tear out those planks and stuff the spaces between the joists with fiberglass! Is sound isolation a concern for people on the floor above you? If not, you could just staple cloth to the joists to cover the fiberglass and you'd have nice deep clouds.

Thanks BC I'm not too worried about the noise above as I have the house to myself most of the time & if I need to I can tell my fam to get out of the living room. ;-) Do I do the whole room or just the area above my mix position?? |

If you can, I would personally recommend doing the whole room. The minimum would be to do the area between the speakers and mix position. Doing the whole ceiling, though, will give you a really nice acoustical improvement.

I have done quite a few treatments in a room quite similar to yours, it's also very low in height. I went for an absorbing "cloud" between speakers and mix-position, now I'm evaluating some additional diffusors to brighten it up -- you might have a look at the details in the thread "DIY Diffusors to the Max" |
