Owens Corning "Curtain Wall" - Work for Bass Traps?

Taking Ethan's sage advice, I've decided to treat my CR with some traps that I will build myself rather than buying a new microphone!

I located a leftover batch of Owens Corning "Curtain Wall 225 FRK" rigid insulation in the 2.5 inch thickness in 2x4 size . They can get it to me, including shipping, for about 1.10 a square foot because they just have the one pack and they want to get rid of it :-)

Seems like a deal given the going rate for OC703 (unfaced) or similar is about $2.

question for the experts here... is Curtain Wall 225 ok for building a diy bass trap or broad band absorber?

it specs out at 2.25 psf density (hence the "225" in the name i guess).

Will this work ok if i take two pieces and just go a little thicker than the standard 4 inch trap? two pieces would make a five inch trap of course.

Or is Curtain Wall 225 simply not dense enough to have the desired characteristics for bass trapping and just be a waste? What about a mid-band absorber or other use with this product (like a 2.5 inch panel)?

Thanks very much.

SPECS: Curtain Wall 225 2.5 inch thick
Density 2.25 pcf
24" x 48" 2.5" R-value 10.9 K-value .23

I'm sure that will be fine for bass traps as long as you double up the panels to be twice as thick.

Thanks Ethan...clarification - so do you mean...

double up the CW225 panels (to yield 5 inches)

or double the normal size of a bass trap panels (to yield more like 8 inches?) since this stuff is less dense than 703

Also, would these have some effectiveness as absorbers if only 2.5 inch thick?

Finally...

FRK side is facing OUT correct? Towards Room?

So many questions! Thanks so much.

Yes, make them 5 inches thick. That will be even better than 703 or 705 only 2.5 inches thick. And cover as much corner surface as you can too. FRK should face the room for corner traps, but use only one layer. Do not have a second layer in between, so remove that for the inner panels.

FRK is fine on walls too, but not at reflection points or directly behind you if the wall behind is closer than about ten feet.

Do I understand that correctly, that this 225 is 2.25 pounds/ cubic foot as opposed to 703 which is 3 pounds/cubic foot?

that appears to be what the specs say yes. The sheet states "Density 2.25 pcf"

I finally dug up a spec sheet on it if you want the PDF let me know and i can post it.

Maybe its easier to find than 703!
