The best place to start is with a little self-education. Learn about what is involved with decent acoustic treatment and then apply it to your space as much as possible. Read, learn, become enlightened...

It's exactly the answer you needed even if it wasn't the one you wanted.

Bass waves hang out in corners (and particularly tri-corners). Start there. Once you have dealt with the corners consider the mirror points.

Glenn, Frank (both GIK) and Ethan (Realtraps) will all give good advice on appropriate trap positioning. I'm sure one of them will be right around to discuss but you'll help yourself if you start by reading those articles. (if you did you'd quickly realise your monitors couldnt be positioned much worse)

I think Eric gave a great answer. Get yourself up to speed a little first which will help you understand what and why is going on. Just to add to the links, here is a general guide line to helping you with set up and acoustic placement. GIK Acoustics: Room Setup

General stuff to help though.

*Bass traps in as many corners as possible made from rigid fiberglass or mineral wool
*You should sit facing the short wall and start back sitting back 38% of the room length.
*Treat the back wall with a combination of diffusion and THICK absorption (6" thick)
*Treat the early reflection points (What Are Early Reflection Points. SPOTLIGHT:Bob Ebeling - Revolution Studio) of the room.

Let us know if you have further questions.

Anything specific I would have told you you can read for yourself in the links I posted. Once you understand what is involved with a proper monitoring setup and acoustic treatment, you can apply it to your own situation.

Great advice from Glenn, as usual. I'll just reinforce the positioning aspect: your positioning is definitely not ideal. It looks like you're shooting across the width of the room, and it's a very narrow space...you're going to have some really nasty standing waves...to make things worse, your ears are like a foot from the hard boundary (back wall), where the bass buildup will be at its worst. If there's any way you could reorient so that you're shooting down the longest dimension of the room you'll do yourself a big favor.

thanks for the info everyone. Weasel, what if I move the sub into the longest corner to give it more distance from a wall, would that be better?

You've got a sub in there?

Dude, I'd say that space is way too small for a sub. You are creating much larger problems with a sub that you're solving...if it's at all possible I'd put the sub away until you have a larger room, then reorient so that you're firing down the longest dimension of the room.

I went back to the pics you posted after you said that. I mean, that sub is literally like 3-1/2' from the wall. If I were you I'd remove it completely, but if you're going to keep it, then it's even more important that you face the short wall.
