gap for bass trap

hello, say you needed to diy some broadband bass traps. oc703 or roxul 60. you plan on 4" of material and can use up to a 6" inch frame. which would be best?

1. 4" material mounted right to the wall
2. 4" material held 2" off the wall
3. material separated - wall\ 1" space\2" material\1" space\2" material

frames will be open on the sides as best I can manage. will the answer depend on which of the above materials I choose? and finally if I use frk, is it correct to assume it goes on the outer surface only? thanks in advance

Lightbulb

Number 2 is best of your choices, but 4 inches thick with a 4-inch gap is even better if you can manage. And Yes, FRK faces the room, one side only.

Thanks Mr Winer, any reason I should go for the more expensive 703 over 6lb roxul?

If you are building it with a frame then go with either. If just wrapping (no frame) then the roxul will not hold up very well. It is not as rigid as 703.
