HELP, Diffuser build questions

Hi guys,

i'm looking to build a diffuser for my studio at home. I'm basing it on the skyline diffuser and just had a few questions.

1) I'm using MDF as a base to attach different lengths of timber to, are these materials ok?

2) From what i've researched so far i can't seem to find a specific formulae for the lengths of wood to be, will it work with completely random lengths?

Would really appreciate the help, thanks alot guys

ooooh also forgot another question

3) how do you go about testing before and after results after the diffuser is built, is it a similar process as to testing absorption?

Thank you!

Lightbulb

1) Yes, MDF is rigid enough to reflect well.

2) No, not random! Download the Acoustic Calculator here:

Acoustic Calculator

3) Diffusion is tough to test. But if you do it right, flutter echo is reduced or gone completely, and the room sounds better and more spacious than had it been treated with absorption only.

Thanks alot ethan, that's a huge help!

so apart from the reduction of flutter echo and an all round general improvement of the rooms sound, is there no way of graphing the results of a diffusor?

cheers

The only way to really do it is in a lab which would give you a scattering coefficient and with absorption it gives a absorption coefficient.

The first picture is the D1 when tested in a lab.

The second is our 244 and Monster traps.

But you could test your room with a program like Room EQ Wizard Home Page which would tell you what kind of results YOUR room is getting.

I would think mdf used for the "buildings" is going to get really heavy really fast. You may want to consider balsa wood for the buildings, but keep the mdf for the panel itself

An MDF base with timber buildings should be fine, as obviously you want reflection and not absorbtion. The MDF only needs to be thick enough to provide structural support for the timber and fixings, so dont go overboard on the thickness otherwise the whole thing will be too heavy to hang easily. Standard 18 mil MDF will be fine, and stronger than you need even. Roofing battens are cheaper than 2x2 timber lengths, and would be fine for cutting into lengths for making the ass buildings, so that could be cheaper than using other timber lengths. They're 2x1 so if you wanted the building ends to look square you'd have to fix two side by side to make 2x2 ends. Good luck, post some pics when youre done

What frequencies would someone typically have on a skyline?
