Thread Starter | Picture frames as absorber frames?
I remember Cojo using some IKEA picture frames as absorber backing frames a while ago. I'm looking to build another 8 or so traps soon and am quite busy so I am looking to cut down construction time. In the past I've made the usual home made timber frames. of course making frames is cheap and not that difficult but I found it quite time consuming last time. I've done a brief search for picture frames but they seem a little expensive. Does anyone know of suitable candidates for the normal 1200 x 600 rocksilk/rockwool/703 slabs? Obviously they don't have to be picture frames, any kind of frame that does the job will do. cost is an issue. I'm not looking to spend more on the frames than the rocksilk will cost.

If you are using Rockwool RW3 it has dimensions of 1000 x 600 mm. Matalan has canvas covered frames which measure around 9650 x 600 mm. The frame is good quality with support joists. They go for £12 each, which if you are short of time is pretty good I think. I was thinking of using the canvas already on there to "back" the Rockwool, but I'm not sure its breathable. Anyway you can just rip the canvas from the frame. They also have picture fasteners on the back. |

It's almost certainly not breathable. The other thing is, how thick are you planning on making these? The Ikea type picture frame might be okay for a 2" panel, but it won't do at all for a 4" or 6" bass trap. Frank

Hi Frank, I know what you mean but these appear strong and rigid made from MDF or similar. I will probably reinforce them a bit as well. I'm planning on building 4" panels for first reflection points. I was thinking of mounting them on a frame with wheels so I can move them either side of my head whilst working. Also when recording I can use them as baffles. |
