GIK and Realtraps greatest hits? (graphs)

I have been experimenting with testing a lot in my new room and also inspired by a few comments in DarkEchos recent thread....

I am really curious to see the effects of really great acoustic treatment in a troublesome room . Do any of you guys from GIK or Real traps (or any one else) have before and after graphs from your own testing or client tests that you are particularly proud of?

There are many graphs on our site showing the improvement after adding varying numbers of bass traps to our 16 by 11.5 by 8 foot lab room. I also have a graph showing an impressive low end response and ringing in my 25 by 16 foot living room (below). But I added the traps over time in this room, and already had at least a dozen before I bought ETF.

Tell me what you have in mind and I'll be glad to email you graphs, or post them here.

I will see if I can find the size of the room. (This is from a customer) From what I remember it was not all that much treatment. sorry for not having more facts on the room.

I am mostly trying to educate myself. I am curious to see the kind of improvements really great bass trapping can do and yours and Glenn's are the most respected bass trap companies I am aware of.

I also do quite a bit of consulting work, helping people put/improve studios together and want have as much info as possible when I explain options to my clients.

We have a lot of clients that also do consulting. Honestly every room is different so we always recommend sending us layouts/info about the room to let us come up with the best plan for you. But yea showing graphs to help promote what is going on is always a good thing.

Here's another graph I made a few years ago for a magazine article. I forget the details, but it was probably 8 MondoTraps in our 16 by 11 by 8 foot room. Note that the gate time is very long, so the graph shows a very high resolution. The vertical divisions are only 3 dB, so that too makes both the Before and After look worse than other graph using lower resolution.

Glenn and Ethan, do you have any success stories of rooms with very small dimensions eg. 7ft x 8ftx x 8ft?

As you know I have started getting my traps ready for my tracking room of these dimensions and was hoping for some inspiration

You have 2 things against you, very small and almost a cube. You will just need to treat the heck out of it and even at that it still is going to be hard to get a good sound in there.

That's a vocal booth, basically. You are more concerned with flutter echo and the overall tone above 200Hz or so. Don't use foam as that will be overbearingly bassy. Don't worry about these low-frequency plots it's not a mix room. Just use diffusion (e.g. Auralex TFusor or QFusor...bigger QRDs are going to not function right that close) and 703/705 absorption to get an even, dead tone which you will supplement with artificial reverb.

Yes, but only second hand when a customer calls or emails us to give us a report. I don't have any actual Before / After graphs of rooms like that. But in practice it doesn't matter. We all know that bass traps work, and that a lot of them are needed for small and badly shaped rooms. So if someone tells me that's the room they have to work with, the only practical advice I can offer is to add as many traps as possible.

Do you guys have any Waterfall graphs of a really High-End room?
I would be really interested to see how that looks.

The first graph I posted is my living room when it had 38 panels. I now have 48 panels including four diffusors. I think it's pretty high end, even though I didn't spend a fortune on the gear.

O.K. ,I see its +/- 3 dB.
I guess this IS high end.
But I would be Interested to see a graph of a dedicated control or mastering room.Would that be even flatter?

It depends entirely on the size of the room and how much bass trapping is in place. Some "high end" mastering rooms have too little acoustic treatment, and some have enough. I'm sure the ones without enough bass trapping can do good work, but it takes longer and is a lot more difficult.

Trust me I have been in plenty of these "high end room" that had great gear but REALLY bad acoustics. Every time they look at me with puppy eyes begging for help.

LoL

I´m just wondering how good it can be. Like,is there a room with +/-1 dB 20to20.

Ethan, when I ever come to the states, prepare yourself for a visit to watch some movies! I was so misinterpretating your graph,it looks kind of not so good at first sight, but when I realised the scale it changed everything. Must be pretty cool to have that at home.

Question for Ethan & Glenn

I would love to take a measurement of my room, i want to see what's going on, are there any websites that actually teach one how to do it? what equipment would i need to do so? i know i am going to have to invest in treatment, and would to show you guys to see where i can improve.

Thanks

This article explains how I use ETF, but the principles apply to all such programs.

Yeah, this thread was pretty unusual. It took way longer than usual to get weird.
