Diffuser placement

Hi there!

We're rebuilding our studio right now, and we have a pretty competent guy helping us build. He also made the initial drawings.

After seeing the video from realtraps regarding diffusers, I'm now a little worried about the placement of the diffusers. In the video they say that diffusers should normally be behind the listening position. We are going to put up one like that, but most of the diffusers (5, I believe) will be to the right of the listening position. The room is quite small, and I'll be no further than 8-10 feet away from the diffusers.

Do we have a problem?

The diffusers are home made, quadratic 'BBC Diffusers', measuring in cm: 48x48x16(longest stem).

Thanks in advance!

Twenty questions number 1.

What is the room? Control room? Live room? Drum booth?

Number 2.

How large is the room?

Number 3.

What are the dimensions of the room?

Number 4.

You say most diffusors, so where are rest going?

Number 5.

What pattern are they going in?

Number 6.

What is the low frequency of the diffusor?

Number 7.

What is the treatment of the rest of the room?

if you want advice for your room then we have to know about your room.

Thanks for moving this to the forum. For a diffusor depth of 16 cm you want to be about 6 feet away. Generally speaking, the "official" minimum distance is about one foot for each inch of diffusor depth. But I have found that even when much closer the sound is far better than a bare reflecting wall. I recently made a video showing the sound of various surface types when very close. Look for the video All About Diffusion half-way down the list on the RealTraps Videos page.

Diffusers on one side of the listening position will probably interfere with your stereo picture. You should make the treatment on the sides (at least at the front of the room) symetrical.

Hi guys.

I've attached 3 pics to give you an image of the room. It's a control room, primarily for recording and mixing. One of the drawings has been tilted 180 degrees for some reason. Sorry 'bout that

I'm in Europe, hence the measurement being in cm (just multiply by 2.54 to get inches).

We might skip the absorbers going under and above the diffusers on the wall to the right, as the room sounds quite 'dead' already having built the bass wall. We'll also put a carpet on the floor.

I really appreciate your inputs!!
